Barzal head contact on Celebrini – Tough Call Review

Mat Barzal caught Macklin Celebrini in the head. There was no call on the play. Is this a head shot, or is it just head contact?

  1. I agree that head contact was incidental, and therefore not a "headshot", but he still throws some shoulder on a guy that has not made any play on the puck. You say Celebrini runs into Barzal, but as you also stated, Barzal is the one who changes his path of travel, he steps in front of Celebrini. He's not making a play for space, he's throwing a pick. Textbook interference

  2. He saw MC coming and knew the dude couldn't see him coming, then leaned into it. He didn't need to take that much space to avoid his teammate.

  3. Not a fan of either but to me it looks like a Hockey play but could also be called for interference cuz barzal took celebrini out of the play while trying to take the puck away from heineman. Celebrini was reaching and lowering his body. No big deal tho

  4. looks to me like barzal was just laser focused on the puck & getting into position for the drop pass. 2 guys fighting for space, celebrini lost. good breakdown

  5. I Call BS analysis.. Because Barzal went after Celebrini a few minutes after that with a semi cheap shot. He knew exactly what he was intending to do on both of the hits..

  6. Those of you calling this a “hockey play” should ask yourselves a simple question: did Mathew Barzal do this on purpose or not? And do you think the same play happens if that’s his own teammate instead of Macklin Celebrini?

If that sounds ridiculous, consider this: head contact has serious consequences. It can alter — or even end — a player’s career. Barzal made sure the contact looked incidental so it wouldn’t draw a penalty. Celebrini never saw him coming, but the hitter knew exactly where Celebrini’s path was going to be. Head contact is dangerous and the NHL puts the onus on the hitter to remove that from the game. Not that some of you give a sh!t about that as long as the victim isn't wearing your team's sweaters.

To bring more balance to my angry post, I would not want to see this happen to any of the Islander's players either. Head hits and concussions have a cumulative effect and permanent cognitive damage is not something anyone should incur in sports!

  7. As a Sharks fan is this explicitly malicious by Barzal? No but this is interference 10 times out of 10 – ridiculous analysis here. Not even being biased when I say Celebrini took a few littke uncalled cheap shots throughout the night and right here Barzal subtly changes direction to cut Celebrini off which, again, is interference

  8. Good analysis. Unfortunate overreach due to puck traffic. Hate to see it happen, but it’s clear Barzal didn’t lunge at Mack or follow through.

  9. I agree with the head contact, but it is still interference. Celebrini is going after the player who has the puck. Barzal is not.

  10. Barzal raised up to brace for contact I played my whole life and I watch hockey for a living it was a cheap shot why try to kill some the best talent in the league tryin to break his jaw like Bedard got his broken Barzal you a hoe

  11. This is the dumbest analysis of a penalty I’ve ever seen. It’s interference with head contact. It’s a major you muffin.

  12. Barzal has been around the league… this is no accident. It's a typical accidentally on purpose move. I've seen someone in Florida do it all the time!

  13. BS, Celebrini did not have the puck, an Islanders player had the puck, its an illegal hit, interference, and Barzal should be suspended and fined, refs should be fined for not calling it. No player is allowed to run into other players without the puck. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

  14. Bro he’s mad bc he stuck his head and and slammed his head into another guys shoulder u guys are glazing this guy like he was cheap shotted

  15. SJ Sharks fan here…This is why Owen Nolan was the best Sharks captain. If he was playing that day he would have trashed Barzal for that $hit. If someone targeted your teammate’s head, the captain shout rally his team and order them to cheap hit their opponents best players and take whatever punishment the league dishes out.

  16. I just see Macklin skate face first into someones shoulder. I dont see Barzal trying to hit him intentionally. Barzal was ahead of him the whole time. Macklin is puck watching and unaware of hus surroundings. Anyone who sees malicious intent to injure on Barzal's part is being intentionally dishonest.
