Colorado Can’t Stop the Bleeding as Penguins Come to Town and Crush Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche unravel as goaltending and defensive woes fuel a 7-2 rout by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Can Nathan MacKinnon and the Avs right the ship before facing the Dallas Stars?

Chris Micieli and Zach Pearson dissect one of the Avs’ toughest losses of the season, questioning shaky performances from Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood, sloppy defense in front of the net, and the sudden disappearance of offensive firepower. Thought-provoking analysis probes Jared Bednar’s next moves, shifting line combinations, and the team’s struggle to win board battles against bigger opponents. Is this just a blip, or a sign of deeper cracks before the playoff push?

Find out what needs to change before Colorado’s crucial Central Division clash, and whether this is the wake-up call the Avalanche desperately need.

  1. Blankenberg is an AHL defenseman. Imagine trading for an undersized useless defender in order to "get ready for the playoffs. Terrible work by the GM.

  2. I think we got exposed in this game and I hate saying it. I agree with you guys when u said that we appear to be too small against guys like this Pitt team. We got beaten up against the boards and lost all puck battles. In addition, which has been a theme, our offense is too cute, too much dumb overpassing, and every shot felt like hit the legs and were deflected.

  3. Avs preparing to choke again. Too bad, Dallas lost too so Avs could have gain a little cushion but no leadership on this team. MacKinnon is just not a leader of men so Joe will always be the best player in Avs history

  4. I know can’t read a lot into the loss. But a lil concerned with Dallas on Wednesday. A loss isn’t unexpected Just don’t want them to lose to Dallas. But 🤷‍♂️

  5. I am only partially concerned although now we really have to beat Dallas, I'm going to choose to believe that Crosby called in the favor for the W in this game to help secure his last playoff run with the Penguins, maybe even stretch that as far to say Mack traded this loss to get Crosby to come to the Avs for a couple of playoff runs before he retires.

  6. See Pittsburgh can survive without Crosby. Too bad the avs can't do the same without Gabe. It continues to be their weakness! If they learn to play as a team with relying to heavily whether Gabe is in the lineup or not then they could be unstoppable!

  7. As an East Coast Avs Fan I don’t get to see a lot of Avs games.
Was the Goals Against w/ the Pens game more on Goalie or Defensemen play?

  8. Avs are 9-9-1 when Landys out this year. If there’s been any constant the last 4 years, it’s that this team has very little heart and grit when he’s not playing.

  9. see the bad part about this is we could of been resting guys if we didnt get in our slump now , 2 more wins and were pretty much clinched , if they dont care about 1st place then rest guys near the end , being 1st or 2nd wont matter if were not at full health . that being said slumping when dallas goes on a tear hurt even more only 3 points back now

  10. The stat with wins with Nuke and without him – we overcame that when he was out early this season. Maybe we need Landy now to be complete. We also need our Grit – missing the dogged determination of Lehky and RossCo. Looking forward to seeing LOC on the ice again to see what he can bring 🙂

  11. Hopefully this game served as a wake up call. Pens had 4 goals on 6 SOG at one point ffs. That is a complete defensive collapse. Next up, enemy #1, Dallas. LETS GOOOOOO AVS!!!!

  12. We'll be fine on the way to the Stanley Cup. As long as we don't have to face an Eastern Conference team 😂

  13. I'm a huge Pens fan, and you guys are right, it's one of those games where nothing went right for the Avs, and nothing could've turned that game around. Nothing. So many pucks bounced the Penguins way, perfectly. On the flip side, listen to the hockey world in the next couple days and lots of people will be crowning the Penguins, or at least overstating their 'power' or status currently in the league. The Avalanche obviously aren't 'bad' or in trouble, and the Penguins aren't going to beat everyone by 5 or score 7 every game. Btw, that backhander by Malkin was a very quick release. The whole 'have to move on' diatribe is meaningless… a city in the tornado belt 'starts to heal' blah, blah…it's inevitable. The Avs are way too good to not move on professionally and take care of business.

  14. If the Avs do not win Wednesday night, you can stick a fork in this team. It's pathetic really when you consider what CMac and Joe have supplied the roster with. Zero grit unless they have their mommy on the ice (Landy). The team can't stay focused for 60 minutes. Cale, and especially, especially Toews, have been sucking up the joint. The shorthanded goals, the mass amount of defensive brainfarts, the inability to score on the PP? Unless these issues are repaired/fixed, get ready for some early tee times. What an F'n joke. Every player should be ashamed. They lack the stomach (for now?) to go all the way.

  15. As a pens fan even tho we’ve been an amazing story this season not in a million years did I see this happening. I think if there was any doubt remaining if my team was legitimate or not last night should be the answer! Lol
