Matheson on Chernyshov – Tough Call Review

Igor Chernyshov took some contact to the head by the hand of Mike Matheson. There was no call on the play. Chernyshov was staggering trying to get up, and even left the game through the Montreal Canadiens bench because it was closer.

  1. It could have probably also been a trip, but again I think Chernyshov pulls that stick into his own skates.

  2. Sorry, you missed saying that there wasn't a headshot. Chernyshov's head hit the ice. Otherwise, I would've called this hooking.

  3. Penalty for sure, but only a minor. Result really sucks, but there's no intent there in any sense, so there's no argument for more.

  4. Am i not seeing this right? Isn't that not the puck well off to the left? How is that playing the puck if he's reaching the opposite direction of the puck? And even if he was, how is it not still at least a trip?

  5. Definitely doesn't look like there's intent to injure but like with high sticking, you have to make a call based on the contact.

Agree with your roughing call or even elbowing should have been called upon review. But his elbow is mostly tucked and below shoulder level most of the time so I can't see him being assesed a major for that one. But it did make contact with the neck/head region.

Trying to play devil's advocate as I'm a Habs fan but really hope the kid is okay! Scary fall

  6. Should have a been a 2 minutes for tripping. His stick got stuck in the skate that causes the unbalanced back fall. Accident but still very unlucky to fall like that.

  7. Looks like a tripping penalty with a very unfortunate injury to me, stick just got caught in a weird place

  8. Unintentional or not, these forearm shives to the head need to be penalized more then they are. The league does not protect it's players as it should. Many guys have gotten injured this way.

  9. Yeah, I think it should've definately been a 2 minute minor for tripping. Not intentional and the result SUCKS, but a trip is a trip even when accidental.

  10. Borderline penalty at most as we are taught to take the body and not the puck as you defend against a moving opponent coming towards you. If you watch, he’s looking down to receive the puck but loses it just before the contact. So it does look like the contact is late. The Sharks players don’t retaliate because they see the play and know it’s not a dirty hit. Still unfortunate outcome and hope Chernyshov is ok

  11. Matheson's stick lifted him off his skates, making Chernyshov hit his head on the ice causing him to be disoriented and possibly concussed

  12. Sorry you can see that he intentionally lifted his elbow so it does hit his head, major.

  13. That was dirty……you can't say that was an accidentally clothesline. Not a fan of either team, but not any reason for contact like that to be made.

  14. Wow! Talk about 'tilting at windmills'. If that was Radko Gudas & not Canadian born Mike Matheson there'd be a demand for a 'firing squad'. A lot of people are ignoring that 'Mark Messier' style chicken wing Matheson used. Total cheap shot!

  15. The way I see it, the stick his behind the skates and Chernyshov is still in control until he gets hit to the face. Love the slow motion on this. I've seen another angle from the camera right on the other side of the ice, the stick was far away and only seems to move with Chernyshov when Matheson gets hold of his stick with both hands as he turns.
