Casuals will say Yzerman failed the rebuild. Real hockey fans will say he failed both rebuilds cause 2 happened in these 8 years, hes about to start his 3rd. Grow up.
Steve’s two biggest problems are he stopped the tank two years too early and his infatuation with the 200’ forward. The defense and goaltending are in good shape. Who is going to put the puck in the net? You aren’t going to find “stars” via trade or UFA in today’s NHL. So this will leave the Wings in the mushy middle for the foreseeable future.

It’s the correct take, they have only ONE player I say is a star and that’s Mo Seider, I want to say Raymond, but he disappears a lot, Kane as much as I love him as a player is too old and now a liability, Cat like Raymond is very good when he’s hot, but he gets cold too and streaks like that, Larkin while again nothing but love and respect for him as a captain and human being isn’t a McDavid, Draisaitl, young Stamkos, MacKinnon, Matthews, or Celebrini, or Crosby, he’s not good enough to put the whole team on his back and do it himself, he’s an elite 2C forced to be a 1C because Yzerman can draft elite Centers.
Kasper I had high hopes for but he’s basically discount Nazim Kadri instead of the Center version of Matt Tkachuk I thought he’d be and Nat Danielson is discount Robert Thomas. Both would be elite 3C and very good 2C, neither will be more than that especially a 1C, don’t have the talent.
The Wings have a good young defenseman in Seider, Edvinnson, and ASP, but the latter two haven’t done enough to get me truly excited, Cossa and Augustine are unknowns, the rest of the farm system are equally unknowns, anyone not mentioned either won’t be around long Gibson and Faulk and Chiarot, or I could fuck if the disappeared tomorrow, they’d be matching their effectiveness on the ice.
All in all, I’m disappointed with Yzerman, he got aggressive when he shouldn’t have that one year with Kane, Gostisbehere, Cat signings and made it so the team isn’t bad enough to have a legit shot at 1st overall, but not good enough to make the Stanley Cup a true reality, now they’re forever stuck in the purgatory of a mid team.
Maybe the give their balls a tug and pursue Elias Pettersson of Jason Robertson this offseason, they have the cap, do they have will?
Red Wings have the talent, they don't use it. Lazy passes, too many turnovers and no coordinated attack, they dump and "change". You can't win playing in your own zone most of the game flipping the puck back out to center.
I can't think of ANY professional sports team's GM, not just an NHL GM, allowed to remain in their job after 7 freaking years of CONTINUING a franchise's playoff drought. We went from "Mr. I" to "Illitch Holdings" and it shows…"Hockeytown" has ironically become a joke, courtesy of a Red Wings legend.
Millennials are Lazy… Thats the Bottom line. No Passion, No Heart , No Hustle. Id give 100 of these kids nowadays for just one Darren McCarthy or a Fedorov . The only ones that has even an inkling of Heart and Passion like the old school guys is maybe Debrincat and Larkin.
We keep hearing about these prospects… but none of them are going to be as good as Robert Thomas. Them not send a package for him or Elias was a massive error.
