Check This Out! Habs Cap Strategy REVEALED!

The Montreal Canadiens have cap space — but how do they make room for their top prospects?

In this episode, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico take you to “NHL Cap Class” and break down how the Canadiens can fit Jacob Fowler, David Reinbacher, and Michael Hage under the salary cap this season.

Is Jacob Fowler in Montreal to stay after his call-up? Could David Reinbacher be the next Laval Rocket standout to get the call from Kent Hughes? And what about Michael Hage — could the Canadiens sign their NCAA prospect to his entry-level contract sooner than expected?

We explain how the NHL salary cap, entry-level contracts, cap hits, call-ups impact Montreal’s roster decisions as the organization prepares for the next wave of young talent.

If you’re wondering how the Habs manage their cap space while integrating their future core, this is the breakdown you need.

  1. Hage got 4 apple 🍎 for 49 pts last night and help advance to the big ten, probably going deep to frozen four /will have to wait for him . By the way McKenna got 50 pts to Hage 49pts

  2. Hage’s is coming from the NCAA players coming from the NCAA do not count on the Cap only players coming from the AHL affect the cap! Just heard this from a cap specialist on another podcast. Are you saying different Marco ?

  3. Another consideration that was not mentioned : doesn't a player that is called up/sent down have to stay X days, before being called up/down again?

  4. DAmico, how about Cutter Gauthier. Flyers wouldnt sign him and burn his 1st yr. Also cost them his services as they ended up having to trade him over it

  5. I think Marco sometimes replies in the comments but if anyone can answer who's knowledgeable on the topic: could someone explain why waivers are not permitted at this point in the season?

I fully understand that getting (re)assigned to an AHL team cannot happen unless you were on an AHL roster prior to the TDL, hence the conversation surrounding Fowler specifically since he can be assigned to the AHL (this is the act that provides cap relief, not waivers themselves), but I see nothing in the rules that says a player cannot be placed on waivers at this point in the season.

For reference, I'm taking article 13.2 of the CBA where it reads that the waiver period starts 12 days before the regular season and ends the last day of a team's playing season. Is there a rule I am missing here that set conditions on waivers themselves or some other rule somewhere?

Optics-wise I fully understand that this is an extremely bad look for an NHL team to do, so I would never expect any team to pull this kind of stunt, but again, I see nothing in the rules that says they can't.

Thanks and hope to get an answer on this very semantic argument lol.
