Ryan McLeod vs Matt Savoie — Who Won the Deal?
Did the Edmonton Oilers actually lose the Matt Savoie for Ryan McLeod trade?
Recently, there’s been a growing debate online as Ryan McLeod continues to find success with the Buffalo Sabres, while Matt Savoie is still carving out his role at the NHL level.
In this clip from Oilersnation Everyday, Tyler Yaremchuk dives into the discourse and explains why he still believes the trade was a win for Edmonton. Development curves are different for every player, and judging a deal like this too early can miss the bigger picture.
Tyler breaks down why Savoie’s upside still makes the move worthwhile for the Oilers and why trades like this can only truly be evaluated years down the line once both players have established their careers.
Did Edmonton make the right bet on potential?
Or will McLeod’s immediate impact in Buffalo swing the narrative?

Savoie has been incredible this year, and getting better all the time. He makes dynamic and responsible plays all the time. Love him.
I dont think it was an awful trade necessarily but Mcleod could have been far more useful in last years cup run since he would have actually played unlike Savoie.
Keeping McLeod and foogle would have been beneficial last year. Savoie is trending up and gives us a bigger window for cap
Oilers spent years developing Mcleod, Broberg, Holloway….just to let them walk once they start meaningfully contributing….they are now at that growing pains phase with Savoie. He's good, but he's not at the same development level as the other guys, for a team that wants to win NOW, allowing the other three guys to walk was a huge mistake. Thanks Jeff Jackson, brilliant hockey mind!
Players I wish we never got rid of;
Mcleod
Broberg
Halloway
Kulak
Players I wish we did get rid of;
Nurse (if he contract was 5-6mill I wouldn't have anywhere near as many qualms cause that extra 4/5 mill WOULD have gotten enough to get at least 1 cup.
I like mccloud, but I don’t really see what his role would be here…
I seem to recall everyone complaining McLeod was too soft in the playoffs
I was furious when they traded McLeod and I'm still mad about it. It was clear when they traded him that he was going to be exactly what he's become, which is possibly the best 3C in the league — a big (6'3", 200 lb) penalty killer who's good on draws, skates faster than almost anyone in the league, can move up the line up when necessary, even play on the 2PP. Plus he was drafted and developed by the club! Literally, what more can you want out of a player?
When until perimeter player, Ryan McLeod is in the playoffs he is a no-show
Haha u guys lost the better player savoie my ass
No if the oiler didn't f up their cap space like usual they would have been able to keep all 3 of those young players so it's all to do with screwing up the cap like they always do mismanagement is the number one fault of the Oilers
Edmonton won the trade
McLeod is just another player the Oilers brought up too young and gave up on too early
Fellas what you’re entirely missing is the WIN NOW significance. McLeod was positioned to help the team win the cup NOW. If Getting a up and comer and having to nurse him along is not what McDrai et al needed.
The league is fixed this way, Canadian teams develop the players then when they hit thier prime years like 23-24 or if they have bonafide star potential they get traded to american teams.Silovs, Broberg, halloway,Stu Skinner, tchuck, Hughes the list goes on n on. These are just some of most recent. As a Canadian I'm sick of it.
Savoie is as good, right now, as McLeod ever was, and he's younger and cheaper with more upside.
Buffalo wins trade early but Oilers might win this trade long term.
From what we've seen of Dickinson, I'd rather have Dickinson in the playoffs than Mcleod at 3C. Savoie is having a solid year too with major upside, it's not like he's a bum. What will be important is seeing how Mcleod plays his new role in the playoffs. If he lights it up then that might hurt, though he was pretty invisible on the Oil in the playoffs, with few points and a negative plus/minus every year.
Savoie is way more valuable for his role to the oil then McLeod ever was
It is all about Oilers does not want to pay. They develop a player and let it go. we have see they are doing so many time. Stop color code this.
