  1. We (Detroit) knew going into the trade that Joe Vitale wasn't going to play a game for us. His concussion issues were career ending, and we had to pay him the remaining physical dollars in his contract, but we could put him on long-term injured reserve so he wouldn't count against our cap hit. The Ilitches had proven that they were willing to spend real money on a winner, and the whole point of the salary cap was to stop teams like Detroit from doing so, so salary cap dollars were all Detroit cared about.

Phoenix, on the other hand, only cared about physical dollars. Their building lease deal was so messed up that it was a struggle to pay what they owed and pay their players.

So in addition to the draft picks, the teams each traded away a player who would never play in the NHL again and costed them the type of money they struggled with, in exchange for another player who would never play in the NHL again and costed them the type of money they could easily afford. That was the win/win!

  2. Well done, but you may want to add the reason Datsyuk left the team early. That would be one Mike Babcock…….
