Mike Benning Makes NHL Debut with Florida Panthers. Dad Played on Original Expansion Team in 1993

Florida Panthers rookie defenseman Mike Benning meets the media before he makes his NHL debut against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, March 12, 2026, in Sunrise.

Benning’s dad Brian was part of Florida’s expansion team from 1993-95.

Florida is coming off a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings. The Panthers trailed 3-2 before Carter Verhaeghe tied it off a pass from Matthew Tkachuk; he won it with 15 seconds left, also off a pass from Tkachuk.

Vinnie Hinostroza had a goal and an assist in his return (2021) to the Panthers; Niko Mikkola tied it at 2 in the third.

Verhaeghe is among the lineup changes for tonight.

Daniil Tarasov made 25 saves in the win.

Florida has won two straight — both against the Red Wings. The Blue Jackets visit Sunrise on Thursday.
