RED WINGS CATASTROPHE – DETROIT COLLAPSES, LOSES COPP & LARKIN – Winged Wheel Podcast – Mar. 11, ’26

This Detroit Red Wings podcast breaks down the catastrophic Panthers collapse & Andrew Copp injury that sent shockwaves through Hockeytown. Detroit Red Wings news and analysis covers the blown lead, roster chaos, and plummeting playoff odds after the season’s most devastating loss.

(00:00) – Red Wings Catastrophe Intro
The ultimate prank by the hockey gods as Detroit’s season takes its darkest turn yet. Raw emotion and disbelief after Carter Verhaeghe’s goal with 14 seconds left caps off a worst-case night for Todd McLellan’s squad.

(06:20) – Panthers Loss Breakdown & Andrew Copp Injury Devastation
Up by one with 91 seconds left, everything unravels in Florida. Marco Kasper and Emmett Finnie show promise, but the Red Wings find new ways to break hearts. Despite looking decent without Dylan Larkin (and later in the game, Andrew Copp as well), Detroit’s late breakdowns cost them dearly. Timing couldn’t be worse as Copp goes down, leaving massive holes in Detroit’s lineup. What can Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, Moritz Seider, and Simon Edvinsson do to carry the team forward?

(26:15) – New Jersey Win Review
Before the nightmare, Detroit won a huge game where John Gibson and Cam Talbot combined for a shutout, Dominik Shine scored his 1st NHL goal, & Seider & JVR led the way. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard also had a big physical impact in his return.

(36:25) – John Leonard, Eduards Tralmaks, and Sheldon Dries Recalled
What can the Grand Rapids Griffins recruits do in relief? Will Nate Danielson or Amadeus Lombardi come up later? How can Detroit’s existing depth show their worth via Rasmussen or Compher?

(53:40) – NHL News & Playoff Race Nightmare Update
Buffalo & Tampa Bay play an all-timer as Dahlin enrages Hagel in a wild game. Also, every desirable outcome went the opposite way around the league. Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, and Ottawa keep surging as Detroit’s path narrows.

(1:06:35) – Overtime Mailbag
Your questions on the bleak outlook, playoff odds, and what the injuries means for Detroit’s future.

  1. I'm a wings fans first and a Habs fan second. My buddy is a Habs fan only, he's convinced both teams are going to the playoffs. I laughed (back in Febuary) and said, "buddy, we haven't hit March" WELCOME TO MARCH GUYS!

  2. Even if they don't fully collapse again and they make the playoffs they are going to get smoked. Screw it I'd rather they just miss for a 10th straight year lol. Gee would have been nice to trade for Trocheck for some center depth but no Yzerman gets Perron whose still injured LOL.

  3. Yzerman wasn’t even expecting ASP to make the roster. So just what was the plan for this roster to start the season then? The only reason Yzerman was pressured into addressing it at the deadline is because he hasn’t at any other time in years.

  4. I hate to say this but Dylan Larkin is this generations Mickey Redmond. I love Mickey. He's been the voice in my head from the days of Pass Sports till today. But he was cursed during his playing days. And I think Dylan is as well.

  5. This team needs some grit and some leadership players that can get the guys to dig deep when shit gets tough. This team is a house of cards physically and mentally

  6. They can generate decent chances but they can’t convert

A lot of pucks just hitting goalie’s pads or chests

It took Verhaege two shots to take over the game..

  7. Offense is actually fine. When they lose the game is actually very close, they were not getting blown out.

  8. Ras, JT, and Appleton might need to go this offseason

    Kane is maybe

Go get a top 6 center

Bring Perron back if you need to

Danielson either makes the team or traded for a good top 6 guy

    Defense is actually fine

Finnie and Kasper have shown some promise after the Olympic break, and might play a role in the top 9 next week

  9. Trading an unprotected first round pick and then losing your top two centers over the span of three games is just the hockey gods giving this team the middle finger

  10. My man on the right who never smiles was bringing it today…love the takes. Honest stuff.

  11. I go to school down here in Ft. Lauderdale and my friend has season tix to panthers games. He invited me to go to this game bc I’m a well known wings fan, and through most of the game, I was having fun exchanging in banter with him. Just before Verhaeghe scored his first goal, I joked that it’s always possible that we fall back defensively and lose in regulation…
After Verhaughe’s second goal, I just had to hide my face because I literally could not believe we just lost to the remnant of an NHL roster that is the Florida panthers…
Needless to say, the car ride back to school was a quiet one.

  12. Almost every single year of the rebuild, has had something in it working against the Wings to improve the team. From the very start of it, with injuries to your potential deadline trade chips in your Vanek, Mike Green's, and others when their value was significant, to your Bert when he popped off then got hurt. Larkin's big injuries. Whatever the Walman thing was, et al. You had the salary cap changes, and covid impacting that whole plan and roster decisions, they never got a top pick, expansion drafts, and, for a while there, it was like the Wings had a player that was acquired to perform and be a trade piece, but, for whatever reason, that player's position had no value in the current year's market – and that happened repeatedly. It's just funny. It was always something specifically out of the Wings' control, sometimes comically specific to the Wings and their needs, that kept blowing up the rebuild plan.

  13. Ras is the definition of "just a jersey." Should scratch him. Curious to see how Tralmarks plays. Maybe pair Pellikka with Seider on 1st line. Edvinsson making too many costly errors. Anything to change the current chemistry of the team. Hope Perron can join soon. Please play the full 60 minutes.

  14. My apologies everyone. I knew/hoped at the beginning of the season the only way some the griffins talent would see NHL ice was if there was an injury or two. Jokes on me, I didn't expect the injuries to be Larkin and Copp. Oh well. In for a penny, in for a pound some say. I hope the new blood can kickstart a team we all know has been under performing on the score card. You can all thank me later when this works out. Either we make the playoffs and celebrate, or we don't and get rid of the cardio jerseys.

  15. I know it feels bleak, but for fwiw they don’t need a miracle to make Playoffs according to DraftKings.

    Odds to make it?
    -290

    Odds to miss it?
    +235

I just bet on +235 bc it does feel like it should be closer to 50-50 if not opposite of odds above right? Or maybe that’s just recent past bias?😅

  16. The team needs to toughen up from within and until that happens we will keep seeing collapses like this

  17. Rassmussen can’t be here next year. How do fix this team? Larkin will be 30 debrincat 29. What is the plan?

  18. Don’t bother counting on Rasmussen for anything. He somehow eludes criticism but he’s easily, consistently, the most disappointing player on the team. His lack of intensity and refusal to use his big body to help his team is absolutely pathetic. So sick of his sh*t, year after year he gets a pass because he was a high pick and has the “perception” of being a heavy defensive center. His body language is terrible too.
