  1. Kovalev was the best stickhandler I've ever seen. Across the league. I don't even think it's close. I can hear datsyuk from the younger generations. Kovalev stomps him. He was effortless. He started the no shot goal (,or softball if you will)

  2. Kovi was my favorite player once upon a time. I think Mario was gone and the stars of the team were jagr, straka, lang and kovalev. I don't think they are alike. Kovi was a former figure skater if I'm remembering correctly and his shot was more of a long precise rocket and I think chinakhov had more of a quick bullet Kessel type release. Of course this is just how I'm remembering things lol I could be wrong. Also how could we forget that 7 minute shift

  3. You’re so hung up on “the good old days” chinakov can be better than Alexei Kovalev, his story isn’t finished.

  4. I think the comparison with Kovalev and Chinakov is that both are Russian and both were rejuvenated coming to Pittsburgh. They both have nasty releases and hopefully, both have their best stats in the Burgh 🤞

  5. I posted this comment in tip of the iceburgh – but here it really fits the subject, so I'll re-share – I started to follow and be a fan of the Pens in 2001 when Lemieux made his legendary comeback and saved the team. At 15 I happened to be in West Virginia and a friend took me to Pittsburgh for the game. Kovalev was thriving with the Pens , but another Aleksey – Morozov was struggling to find his game for a while even though considered a very promising talent. Then a few months in 2002 season Morozov gets to play with Mario and shows his best hockey to date (later he returned in Russia and became truly one of the all-time greatest in our League). But the point is that the Chinakhov arrival somehow reminded me of that Lemieux – Morozov connection . In Columbus Egor for a while was considered a top prospect but never found a spark to show his best game. In Pitt he arrives and gets on the line with another legendary center and show what he can do which is nothing short of top offensive skill. And now even with Geno out he has confidence to deliver! So exciting to watch this end of the season. Love the Pens! . Tough roadtrip ahead, but we can make it !!

  6. Очень здорово, что Егору нравится в Питсбурге и что он много улыбается теперь. Из-за языкового барьера у него не так много интервью и его не так часто видно, поэтому спасибо за инсайд! 😄

  7. Chinakhov is a great player with an elite wrister. Unfortunately, that doesn’t translate to shootouts. At this point Pittsburgh probably needs to spend a set number of hours actually practicing them, because the pattern has become pretty ugly.

  8. DK – Have to correct you, it was McAvoy, not Coyle. Coyle is in Columbus now. Im gonna dare to compare Chinakhov to James Neal when he came over in trade. He instantly clicked with Geno, became his favorite line mate and trigger man, and an elite sniper for most of his time in a Pens uniform. Just hoping Chino doesnt become a locker room issue like Neal did…

  9. My wife is not a huge hockey or sports fan and we just moved to Pittsburgh. Needing a Pens jersey as one does, she wanted a Kovalev. I was taken aback. Why and how do you even know who that is, I asked? (Not that it was a bad choice!). “When I was a kid we went to a game and sat in one of the corners. Some good looking guy [Kovalev] slammed somebody into the glass in front of us, made eye contact with me, and winked before he skated off. He was my favorite player from that moment.”

  10. There is a TSN video made around 2010 or so on YouTube about the top 10 most skilled players ever, and Kovalev is in it. It has former players talking about just how good he was, and there are some nice clips in it.

  11. Thank you DK. Chinakhov has been awesome and that's putting it mildly. Kovalev and that video clip. I agree DK. Great stuff DK.

  12. I don't think I've ever seen a player who reminded me of Kovalev. He was one of a kind.

  13. I will be there tonight! As a Pens fan in Raleigh it’s pretty annoying how they got scheduled here. Lived here since 2012 and still waiting for a playoff matchup….

  14. Correction DK –
you said Charlie Coyle when I think you meant to say Charlie McAvoy in regards to who China pestered & beat man on man in the Overtime session – we all knew who you meant – but the correction of the name itself just states how much more impressive it is what he was able to do there .
Both guys were/are in Boston – but that guy … he doesn’t get beat very often .

  15. About 2 weeks ago, I commented somewhere online that with Chinakhov’s quick and heavy release, he reminded me of James Neal. With 40 goal/season potential, but a better two-way player than Neal. Agree with DK, any comparison with Kovalev…. nyet. But after the weekend, it’s clear that Chinakhov has the potential to be a much better playmaker than Neal ever was, so forget about that one. I think the best response right now is just to sit back and laugh at Columbus.
