The Montreal Canadiens were active behind the scenes at the NHL trade deadline — but the big move never came. Reports indicate GM Kent Hughes worked the phones until the final minutes trying to complete a “significant deal,” but the trade ultimately fell through before the deadline.
So what happened? And more importantly… could the Canadiens circle back this summer?
Hughes confirmed the Canadiens spent a lot of time working on one specific trade file that went right down to the deadline, but it simply couldn’t get across the finish line. However, the door remains open for Montreal to revisit the deal in the offseason as the team continues trying to take the next step toward contender status.
In this video, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down:
• The significant trade Montreal tried to make
• Why the deal didn’t happen at the deadline
• What it says about the Canadiens’ long-term plan
• And whether Kent Hughes could circle back this summer
The Canadiens may not have made a splash at the deadline — but the groundwork for a major move might already be in place.

Buffalo added size and toughness to go with there speed and skill. Habs did nothing and will get bounced in the first round most likely. If only the Mtl had an Arber Xhekaj type d-man to help clear the front of the net and and stand up for the little skilled players who will be targeted during playoff hockey….oh wait….
Is Laine coming off the books actually going to help the trade in question i.e. the team doesn't have that coming back as part of the deal?
Dylan Strome, Matthew Knies.
They were clearly after Scott Laughton and were willing to trade Hage and a 1st round pick but Treliving was worried the deal was too good so instead went with the 3rd round pick from LA.
People keep telling me Hischier but I don't believe it at all.
So is it true that it was someone not talked about before? That is what makes the rumour interesting imo.
Wilson will only be 36 in the last year of his contract and 6.5 will be the equivalent of 4.5 by then which is totally fine for one fourth line vet then if it means you get Tom Wilson for the next 3-4 playoffs. If he was a free agent this off season he would get $11m – it's a steal.
Getting Tom Wilson is a no brainer if it's anywhere near possible.
Yes, Knies would work. But we need to fix our roster this summer.
Personally I think it is just BS; especially given they were not in the queue. But if I had to guess it had to be a center imo for it to be a big deal.
This month, I'm going to mainly love Canada being in their summertime zone. 11pm home game starts means that I might be asleep by 02.30 am.
😀😀😀❤❤😀😀😀
Shawn i hear you but Wilson would cost too many habs talents to acquire Tom Wilson forget it. not going to happen? If it does who are the habs going to loose?habs would sacrifice all those hot drafts they have coming up?
look at Pickrin he is a defenceman 43 goals to this day.ok it is not NHL level but who in habs history as defencemen scored 43 goals in the minors? deniying his talent to score as a defenceman would be suicidal???
Bro told me to trust him and said it was OEL from Toronto.
It wasn't Thomas or Kyrou. It was a hockey deal that involved players who weren't really on the "Trade" radar. 2 players from Winniped. 🙂
GM's in the NHL need to ajust there strategies of when they acquire and sihn contracts they must not overlook the time frame length of those contract with aging un injured or injured players. Like Gally 11 in Mtl , Laine, Dack and Ghuly is on that list also. we can see what that serious cut has done. It could be mental a return to play with operation needed But physically a injured player can loose some of the edges he had before that or those injuries.
Patience fellas. This team is missing multiple pieces to be a serious contender. I like the way this rebuild is going, let’s not sell the farm just to make a feel good trade. Develop and process what we have coming up the pipeline first. Go Habs!
Wilson would be 36 at the end of his contract
🤢🤢on Tom Wilson I don’t want 💩on our team
Nico Heisher is my choice
What a terrible time-line we live in. Logan M. HAD to be traded because he sent a (very bad) pic of a consulting adult in the middle of a sex act (not condoning what he did but seriously, he did the crime and paid the time), meanwhile a 36 time convicted rapist is still in the White House. What a joke. Logan sure would look good on the blue line right now.
McAvoy was the guy
Lafrenière (3 ways) also fits the scenario
maybe Seattle?? Beniers?? Montour??
Brady Martin out of Nashville is who I would want. Great chemistry with Hage at the WJHC. It would cost but I’d pay.
Shane Wright?
Lafreniere is my guess. Same agent as Dobson, Beck, Roy. And two of those guys must be looking for a trade to get an NHL shot.
Why does this merit any discussion if nothing transpired?
