  1. Elite refresh pull. I think this is a positive. Yes it can be an issue 2 years from now when hes 36 making 6.5 but there is enough projected cap space where there's no real concern about it being too much. Plus Roy said in an interview they want to work on Ritchies physicality. That plus Schenns playstyle, experience, skill and the fact theyre on the same line, it is possible they see this as a "this guy can help us now and help mentor our later" which could be more valuable than a 24th-32nd pick

  2. It’s regrettable that we live in an age where the internet allows everyone to publicly express their opinion. This can be good, but it also has a downside. I remember when the Islanders traded Billy Harris and Dave Lewis, two popular players who I had grown up in the organization and had contributed the rise of the Islanders, for a player who was wearing the same helmet that he wore as a kid playing hockey. My immediate reaction was one of disappointment, which, as history would indicate, was wrong. Butch Goring was the key to 4 straight Stanley Cups. While it’s likely that many other Islanders fans felt the same way, there wasn’t any vehicle for me to share that with other disgruntled fans. These days I ignore comments from lunatic extremists: no one can possibly know how a trade is going to work out immediately after the trade, nor judge a GM based upon a single action.

  3. Maybe I spent too much of my Islanders fandom watching Milbury and Snow destroy a franchise. I'm not going to be one of these "Fire Darche" people one season in. I was a fan of Lou but objectively he signed long term deals that made no sense. Engvall exhibit A. But then again Lou had to deal with bad decisions from his predecessor ie Andrew Ladd Exhibit B having to part with Devon Toews. I never thought this was the Islanders Stanley Cup year and wanted to be a seller. No offense to the younger social media crowd (you know those young enough to wear Fisherman jerseys and feel no shame) that want Darche fired because he didn't reel in Kyrou. The prospects that would have taken to get him would not have been worth it. I think the time frame makes sense because Darche believes in the prospects he brought in and they won't be ready for 2-3 years. Bringing in playoff grit with leadership and Stanley cup experience I'm fine with. Schenn is also going to be a mentor for the likes of Ritchie. Time will tell if he made the right decisions.

  4. Soucy and Palat and schenn are 3 older declining over paid players. Tell me this is not literally a Lou move

  5. If, and that is a big if, the Islanders win more than one playoff round THIS YEAR, will we look at these moves as a good thing, especially if these guys are big contributors?

  6. Was it a great trade – no. Was it a bad trade – no. Do fans of this team want to be in the Sabres position? The NYI did not make the playoffs from 1995-2001 and people thought that was a long drought. Buffalo hasn't made the playoffs in 14 years and are just seeing progress now. I mean come on…

  7. People don't understand how the NHL works nowadays. You have so much parity in the league that unforeseen circumstances in a season can derail even the best teams and when that happens, they sell off players for assets. There is a tier of top teams that wasn't built overnight. When you're in the position to make the playoffs, you do what you can within reason.

  8. Historically, “buyers” at the trade deadline acquire veterans to complete the roster, “sellers” acquire prospects and draft picks. DUH!

  9. Perhaps you should analyze why the anger exists around this deal. Is it because Braden Schenn isn't a worthwhile asset anymore?….of course not. The cost of this deal was steep because it served a dual purpose….the Islanders acquired a good forward with a lot of experience for this season and two additional…but…they also dumped a stupid contract that shouldn't have been handed out in the first place! Let's not pretend that a first, a third, and a decent prospect is a reasonable price for a second line forward, who is 34, and still has term…it isn't…not even close.

  10. Next season's "bottom six"… Lee (36, $5M) Pageau (34, $4.8M) Holmstrom (25, $3.63M) Palat (35, $6M) Schenn (35, $6.5M) Duclair (31, $3.5M) Engvall (30, $3M) Cizikas (36, $2.5M) Gatcomb (27, $900k) MacLean (27, $775k) All 10 of there players are bottom six talent on legitimate contending team. On the Islanders, several will be elevated to the top six where they don't belong. This obviously leaves no room for any young prospects to crack into the lineup. I get it. Trust the process. Be patient. The issue is, when you have a flawed team that struggles to score and is the worst team in the NHL on the PP and you're going to run back the same team next season, it leads fans to get impatient and question that process.

  11. I think 2 things can be true at onxe, but my only question is, does these trades happen with Romanov n Palmieri out this season? Well never know. Because if so then its hard to say we shouldve done it. But then its unfair to not reward them e a player or 2

  12. I think people are forgetting the fact that this was supposed to be a transition year. We’re not in the position we’re in now without Darche. Next year we’ll have our top prospects on the roster. Let’s also not forget that we offloaded Drouin so it’s really only an additional $2.5m for Schenn. Stop discounting what his playoff experience and leadership brings to the team.

  13. If Palmieri and Romonov don't get hurt….the cap strap wouldn't have been so suffocating he should've gone after Bertuzzi

  14. I wanted both 27 & 44 traded but Lets be honest, ownership wants playoff revenue, Isles have a 70+ % chance of making it so IMO Darche is doing what he can to see that happen without giving up the future

If you break down the trade its not bad. A 3rd we got from Zippy to remove JD (who just scored as a Blue) not everyone can handle playing in NYC

1 low first and a weak prospect for Schenn (which is what everyone thought Pager would pull at 1 year younger)

Did Schenn have a great first game, no. But what was noticeable was the tough play the team played with after his first hit. That was the most physical the team has played over the last 30 games.

We finish #2 in the metro
