Why Flyers DIDN’T TRADE Rasmus Ristolainen: GM Danny Briere Comments on NHL Trade Deadline

Why didn’t Rasmus Ristolainen get traded at the NHL Trade Deadline? Charlie O’Connor reports live from the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees to report on Danny Briere’s press conference after the Orange and Black kept defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen after the NHL Trade Deadline passed despite intense trade speculation.

As the NHL Trade Deadline approached, many fans and analysts expected Ristolainen to be moved for future assets. However, Brière’s comments shed light on why the Flyers held onto the big right-shot defenseman and what it means for the team’s plans moving forward.

Briere also speaks on other moves the Flyers made, including Bobby Brink for David Jiricek, Deslauries to the Carolina Hurricanes, and more.

  1. 6:38 Next year, in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, one of you is going to have to call Briere and impersonate an NHL GM and ask what they want for Risto.

  2. Waaaaay too many no move contracts and player pull these days! The only way to get better..as well stated…is through the draft! RFA's and the trade deadline will have minimal effect from here on unless things change, like only giving one goaltender ,maybe 2 forwards and 2 D no move deals and a lesser limit on how many years a player can be signed for, depending on previous performance would be a start. Otherwise, the draft will continue to be 90% of your teams players until you have a winning franchise that players would want to come to. And..fix this no state tax bs too that attracts so many more players..the window is small to make your team better these days.

  3. Instead of putting him in the AHL, they should scratch Jules and put him in the NHL. I can’t stand Jules no offense to him but he’s buns.

  4. What makes them think they can turn Jiricek’s game around like they did with Drysdale and Risto? Brad Shaw is gone!!!

  5. The Flyers do need to draft well to make it out of this as a successful rebuild, DB inherited an absolute CLUSTER from ol' Chucklef**k and I don't envy him for walking into that. That said, there's an even bigger, and arguably more crucial aspect to it that they will have no choice but to gamble on.
To succeed they will NEED to rely on found value through acquiring players like Jiricek who have some risk to them. Bringing in players at low-cost high-risk and having them pay off is critical. Their "coffers" are so barren this is not optional.

  6. So Charlie if you as a beat reporter are worried he may get injured and not play why would you think anyone is offering a big amount for Risto. Im glad he stayed we need him.

  7. Bill, every year you are letting yourself go, more and more. I'm not saying this as a troll, or trying to hurt your feelings. I'm saying it because I'm genuinely getting concerned for your health. I've listened/watched you for years, and it's gotten to that point, buddy, you need to do something about it.

  8. Defensemen were being traded for 2nd round picks this trade deadline. Briere overvalued Risto, can't go by last year's deadline!. We need to tank and get a pick. Also, I am not sure the coach will make it past the second year. The players don't seem to respond to him!

  9. With Bobby and DLo gone, can we finally get Tocchet to leave Grebenkin in the lineup for more than 2 games consecutively? He's a stud

  10. Briere straight up lied when he said there was “too much smoke”. Everybody with two brain cells to rub together new long ago that it was Ristos time to go. I don’t even need to explain why it’s that obvious. I just don’t like when someone looks you straight in the eye and lies to you.

  11. Flyers have barely any players anyone wants unless they want overachievers. The only way to attain elite talent is in the draft, top 3 position.

Flyers won't clear house and tank. This is what will happen next year.

Porter joins the team, Vladar is good, Mich is in better shape, Flyers make the playoffs next year and win one round and continue to make the playoffs but go nowhere because they don't have enough elite talent but it will put people in the seats and that's good enough for Comcast.

In the meantime, the Ducks, Blackhawks, Redwings, Sabres, Mammoth, Kraken, and Canadiens will win cups before the Flyers figure out how to build a real team.

  12. This past summer’s training camp really highlighted our D prospects in a negative way. No bubble guys stepped up. Smart to add more lotto tickets to that grouping. Not saying Bonk or MacDonald are toast… but you can’t rely on them and Grans and Ginning etc. to be the answers yet.
