So 1 first round pick this year, of course means you have to give it up next year to the bruins anyways. Even if you get to keep it by losing enough to make it to the bottom 5 (big if) will this one player be able to provide depth at defence , second line scoring, toughness and goaltending all rolled up in one player. This is how the Matthews era ends, a team unsure of whether to tank or not. A whole era wasted, and now Buffalo and Detroit are rising into contenders. The Leafs blew their window. Unreal how much their window was mismanaged, now they are a bottom-feeder. The franchise is an absolute JOKE.
What will 34 do in the offseason and will he abandon the sinking ship? He and Nylander are the ship. Spot on. As a casual it has been interesting to watch the Leafs, the media and fans cling to an overpaid group of skilled players who were never the right mix together to win. I get the hopeful early years but it got silly once Tavares got added without moving one or two of the others out for more assets and roster contruction purposes.

Trade Matthews … rebuild the team and wait 3 to 5 years. In time we will see a new group to carry the team back to the playoffs. It's not pretty but that's where we are. Keeping him will only prevent the rebuild of the Leafs, in order to be a viable contender.

Are you willing to tank for a 5th overall pick now knowing that means you lose your 2027 pick to Boston as unprotected and then end up losing the 2028 unprotected pick to Philly because Boston would take over the 2027 Philly pick. And that means the Philly pick now shifts from top 10 protected in 2027 to unprotected in 2028 because Boston bumps them out. The way the Leafs look now those 2027 and 2028 picks are probably gonna be in the top 3.
