Why Tom Fitzgerald Isn’t on the Hot Seat After Deadline | Devils Rink Report

The fallout from the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline is raising serious questions about the future of the New Jersey Devils.

After the deadline, GM Tom Fitzgerald said he expects to remain in charge and that he and ownership are “in sync.” But with the Devils sitting outside the playoff picture during what were supposed to be their Stanley Cup-contending years, fans are asking: how is nothing changing?

In this clip from Devils Rink Report, we break down:
-Why Fitzgerald may not actually be on the hot seat
-What his comments about ownership could mean
-Why the end-of-season press conference could be the real signal of his future
-Whether ownership, led by David Blitzer, deserves the blame

With stars like Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Jesper Bratt locked into long-term deals, the Devils were supposed to be entering their prime Cup window. Instead, the results haven’t followed.

Is ownership sticking with Fitzgerald the right call?

  1. Pretty amazing. He’s got the owners who aren’t paying attention over a barrel and is completely gaslighting the small percentage of the fanbase that actually cares about this team.
