Toronto Maple Leafs: Brad Treliving Underwhelms at Trade Deadline | Leafs Look Unserious

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving left fans underwhelmed at the NHL Trade Deadline after getting off to a promising start by moving Nic Roy. We break down the disappointing return for Bobby McMann, the embarrassing return for Scott Laughton, and the overall sense of incompetence and lack of direction plaguing the organization. We also discuss the futures of Treliving and Craig Berube, and revisit the organization’s refusal to commit to a full rebuild, something that feels more inevitable with each passing day.

  1. You seem to forget that Treliving built Calgary into the power house team they are today. I absolutely agree that Berube mishandled not only Laughton but the entire roster.

  2. Just no on the "you can't make everyone happy" stuff. We are actively paying for Treliving's terrible trading right now. He didn't throw away some firsts to try and win. He took bad trades to try and win. No top 10 protection on this year's pick? A good prospect and a first round pick for Carlo? It's not that he tried to make moves to go for it. It's that he let himself get absolutely overwhelmed by other GMs because he's bad at trade negotiations. And then after his coach mishandled players (especially how he mishandled Laughton) he has to basically give him away.

This mess is on Treliving. Absolutely silly to pretend that the reaction to the Leafs making few or minor moves last year being anywhere close to the reactions to right now. People would have been annoyed. But people would have also said "Dubas has thrown away a lot of assets, maybe we should actually hold onto some, AND this core hasn't proven anything. Time for them to actually produce." Plus people would've been far more focused on being pissed at Marner for not waiving so that the Leafs could add Rantanen. Not being pissed that they didn't add depth.

  3. 1:54 Oh! You’re THIRTY-SEVEN, are you? Well, that’s cute… I’ll be SIXTY-ONE on April 30, and my absolute earliest memory about ANYTHING is getting a little Leaf’s jersey on my third birthday in 1968 and my dad telling me that “The Leafs won the Stanley Cup last year.” 💙🤍

There are few people on the planet who have been a Leafs fan much longer than me who ALSO have ZERO recollections of a Stanley Cup victory.😢

You were born in 1988, you were only two years old when Harold Ballard finally died. So you missed the Harold Ballard ownership years entirely.

  4. Let's not forget how fleeced Treliving got for Carlo.. the 1st was fair being top 5 protected, BUT he gives away Minton.. we never get a top tier prospect in return and when we get a 1st rounder it's top 10 protected! Leafs get F#cked at every turn, Colorado does it right , Treliving and the Leafs just DON'T

  5. sorry – we gave up a 100pt / yr performer who got MORE points in the playoffs than our captain. The blame isn't on the bit pieces we got – it's the decline of Matthews / Knies because their playmaker is gone. The top 2 lines aren't feared by ANYONE anywmore

  6. Why would you want to retool around a group that has constantly folded under pressure over the years? 5 years of constantly hoping this core would grow a pair and take the next step.

  7. Never was a fan of the leafs, my dad knew better than to let me fall into that trap. Never understand why people choose to cheer for a corporate overhyped money making machine. I'd rather a small market team win a cup than any of these corporations. Love your show though guys!

  8. Trelivings dad is bffs with the board I dont see Brad getting canned. But if I had to choose one Id rather Brad then Berube. Berube has ruined Matthews

  9. Leafs ownership doesn’t care about you. Having a winning team is an unnecessary expense. Ticket sales will stay the same, sweaters will continue to sell, beer and hotdogs will be flogged. And you will line up to pay for it.

  10. Other then Ekblad did Florida do it by rebuilding or did they do it by trades and UFAs? There are multiple ways to becoming good

  11. I think last year's playoff run was the best the leafs could achieve with this core. Once Marner left, I didn't think the dropoff would be that bad but expected a less productive year. The terms of contracts, $s, no trades etc handcuffs future success. Add the fact there are no prospects and picks, it only goes downhill from here. If I can see this, where is management on this?

  12. Keith Pelley has made things a lot worse by inaction. He didn’t renew Shanahan’s contract as president… that’s all folks! He’s a corporate lackey, and has no capacity for sound hockey decisions.

  13. Matthews is one of the best players in franchise history, not good enough to win but likely best chance they have. You gotta at least see matthews with different coach. Lowest scoring in a while under Berube

  14. When your best players are more worried about purses and fashion ,hanging out with Bieber and soft as butter what do you expect? It was obvious from the start this core wasnt playoff caliber too soft.

  15. This is the end of a decade of incompetence. Sorry, but the Leafs were NEVER a real contender. They never should have gone after Tavares, and they never should have kept going all in with plug in play players. They were a team that had the core pieces fall in their laps, and did NOTHING to support them. They figured that Tavares, Matthews, Nylander and Reilly, was Gretzky, Kurri, Messier and Coffey.
They weren't. And also, they didn't have a Grant Fuhr in nets, and didn't have any depth. Every other fan base has laughed at the Leafs, because everyone else knew this team was never a real threat.
Now everyone is crying because the window is closed. Guess what, it was never fully opened. The Maple Laffs is an appropriate name.

  16. The Leafs have been burning the future for years. Now we get to sit where we are. Sit tight.. cuz this is a 3 to 5 year correction, minimum.

  17. The problem is that the board of governors does not want a rebuild. The management structure is the problem. It cost Dubas his job, when he wanted to trade Marner for real value.

  18. OEL had a inside handshake with Treliving not to trade cuz his wife was due to have a baby and he didn't want to leave so that why he's still there he was never going and that is the whole issue with this organization they put the players first and the product second. That woke ass view of feelings first is where they went wrong thanks to Dubas they started bringing in the wrong people like Wickenhieser she never needed to be added to the staff thats why these players are pussies they are treated like pussies they need to revamp the whole organization from scouts to their media staff and everything in-between. This is a 10 year plan and at that point I'll be well into my 60's and never seen a cup will probably never see it happen here. Seen it all but never seen a cup
