The Buffalo Sabres have made their first couple trades before the NHL trade deadline, landing depth defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets. Two enormous defenseman who figure to play on the Sabres third pair going forward. Despite adding defensive depth, neither player projects to help the Sabres much come postseason time. Stanley is a rare combination of size, physicality, meanness, but also very poor defensive performance. Did Jarmo Kekalainen only acquire Luke Schenn to help trade for his brother Brayden Schenn?

Plus, the Sabres get center Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers, helping them in one area they struggle a lot, the face-off circle. Is Carrick going to be the guy Lindy Ruff puts on the ice late in games to close out a lead?
