Every hockey fan looks at the NHL standings and assumes the teams at the top must be the best teams in the league. But that’s not always true.
The standings measure results.
Playoff hockey is about how you play.
In this video we break down five NHL teams to show why the standings can be misleading heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Using real game clips and tactics from modern NHL playbooks, we look at:
• Overperforming teams – teams winning despite underlying weaknesses
• Underperforming teams – teams playing elite hockey but not getting the results
• Chaos teams – teams that can beat anyone on any night because of superstar talent
Teams featured in this breakdown:
Boston Bruins – safe systems and one-goal hockey
Minnesota Wild – defensive structure built around star talent
Vegas Golden Knights – five-man puck support and relentless offensive pressure
Carolina Hurricanes – one of the most aggressive forechecking teams in the NHL
Edmonton Oilers – pure chaos driven by superstars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl
Instead of just reading stats, this video teaches you how to identify the real strengths and weaknesses of NHL teams before the playoffs begin.

I still don’t like the format, if the Wild are over performing, let that be exposed against a lower seed not in a seeming heavy weight battle with the Stars, like if it was a (pure) 1 v 8, they’d be playing the Mammoth, so let the mammoth expose them, I hope that makes sense
Oilers are 100% a chaos team. I don't know how much more my heart can take. Let's Go Oilers, great video coach!
I'm a huge Canes fan and every year we are always one of the favorites, and every year I feel like we are missing just a piece or two to become the actual favorites.
Love the breakdown! I think that Vegas is going to be like the Panthers of the previous 2 years. Built for the playoffs. Might not be the highest seed but are going to elevate for the playoffs.
Coach the GOAT 🐐
I really enjoy your system reviews. Im currently mystified by our local boys in the pizza pizza red santa suits. Ive been a long time player and fan even longer but, i dont remember watching team post winning record and a negative goal differential. It seems impossible to me? Some good players yes but, no supreme talent here. They're just hard working squad that hangs on and, hangs in somehow with some very good netminding. This seems like a flagrant case of the standings lying. Thoughts?
The top team in the pacific cant make the wildcard in the east
Carolina can win 82-0 in regular season, still won’t scare nobody. Player quality always> perfectly system
A true Cirsi merchant, will get taken apart by tempa in 5
Well done again👍 I think your analyzes are creme de la creme in the world.
Brilliant systems breakdowns. I always say as an oilers fan it’s the chaos is that why we have the highest ceiling and lowest floor of any contender. U never know what yer gonna get!
I'm a big Canes fan, and i agree with your take. It's crazy to be so negative about a good team, but i've seen this movie many times. Come playoff time when effort and hitting ramps up, they will be outmuscled and unless Bussi gets back to the form he had before the break, the Canes have no chance. It's already showing on this Western roadtrip. Unless a great deal is made at the deadline today, i see disappointment.
Vegas has been the best team I've seen this year at breaking the forecheck. Their passes are gone before the defensive player arrives to apply pressure. I don't know what their problem is with giving up so many goals in the first period but if they could play a full game like they do in the third period then they would be one of the most dangerous teams in the NHL. They are very skilled at creating space with passing.
The Oilers are a true wildcard. They have the best finisher in the league at speed and the best finisher in the league from a stationary position. That's kind of ridiculous. Constantly playing from behind is draining them white, though.
Great job! Very informational.
