Avalanche Address the 3C Position and Trade For Nicolas Roy. Will He Be a Good Fit?

Colorado Avalanche land Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs to bolster their 3C position, but was giving up a first-round pick too steep a price? Chris Micieli and Zach Pearson break down what Roy brings to the ice—size, playoff grit, and physical presence—and question if his slower skating could impact the Avalanche’s trademark speed. With playoff experience and a year left on his contract, could Roy be the missing piece for a deep run, or did the Avs overpay for a bottom-six center?

The hosts analyze Chris MacFarland’s strategy, weighing the trade against the failed pursuit of Nazem Kadri and the ongoing need for playoff-ready depth. As the Avalanche gear up for a pivotal showdown with the Dallas Stars, conversations heat up around future moves, the importance of cap retention, and whether Colorado’s aggressive approach will pay off down the stretch. Don’t miss timely reactions and fan perspectives on this high-stakes roster shakeup.

  1. Fifth round picks usually don't play many NHL games. Of course every team needs minor league stock, too.
Even first round picks, especially over the 25th pick rarely step into the NHL without a couple years of development. So, if that holds, how open would the Avs Cup window still be in 2029 or 2030?

  2. Maybe the talks about Calgary retaining Kadri's salary died when they talked to the ownership. "Insider" talk is subject to manipulation by GMs, agents, etc. Friedman is definitely a solid insider, but it would be interesting to see how many of his rumor reports pan out.

  3. The market dictated the price tag. McCarron and Murphy trades netted a second so that started things and showed other teams your paying a higher price for trades.
