The San Diego Gulls fell 2-1 to the Rockford IceHogs Sunday afternoon at BMO Center, splitting the weekend series after Saturday’s 5-4 win.
After a scoreless first period, Nathan Gaucher opened the scoring just 1:16 into the second, finishing a setup from Matthew Phillips and Nikolas Brouillard to give San Diego a 1-0 lead. Rockford answered midway through the frame with a goal from Aidan Thompson, and despite a 13-shot push in the third period, the Gulls couldn’t solve IceHogs netminder Owen Flores again. Brett Seney broke the 1-1 tie with 2:25 remaining in regulation, handing San Diego the narrow road loss.
The Gulls outshot Rockford 13-11 in the final period and finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Tomas Suchanek made 27 saves in the effort.
