Boston Bruins Trade Deadline Update | Don Sweeney Press Conference Reaction
Don Sweeney spoke to the Boston Bruins media ahead of the March 6th NHL Trade Deadline, and while he didn’t share exactly who they’re targeting or what teams he’s talking to, he did share a lot of information I want to dive into — including some surrounding James Hagens. I’m going to cover all of that and more in my latest video.

What do you think the Bruins do at the deadline?
The only player worth giving up futures for that's allegedly available is Robert Thomas
BOS doesn't have a real 1C today
No NHL team including Boston has ever won a Stanley Cup without a real 1C
No BOS propect including Hagans & Leterneau are guaranteed to become anything close to Robert Thomas
Hagans is the only untouchable unless it were to be a one for one which it would never be
However, BOS 2026 1st, Leterneau, Lohrei & something else like Poitras or even Cooper Simpson?
Absolutely, pull the trigger
Bruins homers would scream Bergeron & Krejci were elite Top 6 centers & I would agree, they were
Did Bergeron or Krejci ever score 77+ points in 3 of 5 years? NO
Did Krejci ever score 77 points in any of his NHL seasons? NO
Did Bergeron? Once in 2018-19
Robert Thomas has scored 77+ points in 3 of last 5 years playing for miserable STL where he's the only player opposing teams have to worry about
Thomas would score 90+ points easily between Pasta & Geekie
Also, Sweeney has drafted 65 players in 11 years & only 3 of the 65 play for Boston today
Only ONE of the 65 became a Top 6-ish player, Debrusk who was and is an inconsistent mentally weak cry baby that'll never sniff even a 50 point season, let alone the 77+ points ones that Thomas has been putting up regularly
Sweeney has drafted 28, 3rd-7th round forwards in 11 years
And the only forward of the 28 to play more than 60 NHL games?
4th line throaway Jacob Lauko who they threw away for nothing because he's a 4th line throwaway
11 drafts & 65 draft picks & Sweeney has proven in spades that developing Top 6 forwards is an issue for them & he's had ZERO luck developing higher ceiling offensive centers
Thomas is worth the price because he alters their Cup fate immediately while also maximizing the primes of Pasta McAvoy Swayman Geekie Zadorov & both Lindholms
However, Thomas is the only guy out there that is allegedly available worth pursuing
They shouldn't give up key assets for anyone else
Save them for future years when they're a much more Cup competitive team
Beyond happy to hear Sweeney say this. We’ve gone all in too many times with teams that were hopefuls to begin with in the post season. Being realistic about where and what we are will give us the best setup for the future. I’m confident now that if the right deal rolls along for one of our pending UFA’s they’ll pull the trigger but it’s seeming more and more that the roster we have now is the roster the season will close out with.
I remember the days when Bob Joyce and Craig janney came right from college onto the Bruins for playoffs. What's the difference with hagans? I think sweens should go after bertozzi again. He's at 5.5 million. Put him with Lindholm and pasta or with minten. He's got 26 goals this year Bert has the marchand attitude as well. Id certainly rather have Bert than eyssimont or whoever they're putting out there on that 3rd line.
Great insight, Sir!
With age comes wisdom, but Friday will tell the story. I am glad to hear they are not giving away player and looking to the future.
Based on your analysis, and Sweeneys statements I think we'll pretty much stand pat and maybe find a way to deal Peeke away. Having said that, I've been surprised before so anything could happen. We could wake up tomorrow and find Pasternak in Edmonton. (just kidding..)
So far Sweeney getting it . I didnt have the stomach to watch his presser .figured you would recap it an thank you .as far as rob thomas yes hes good center .. BUT why is blues wanting to trade he has reasonable contract an hes their best center . I would think blues would want to build around him so does he want out is he a peoblem im trying to understand why blues dont want him .i dont get watch lot blues hockey hes not bad in the video game haha .an also im a laternau freak so im not putting laternau in any package for now haggins laternau an zellers are untouchable an im the guy that woukd trade his mom haha .you family have great week thanks for Sweeney report
My dream trade would be to trade Swayman for a top forward or D. Or both.
Bring up Dipetro.
To answer the question posed at the end of this video…
Yes, I would.
The Bruins (now) have enough prospect and first-round upcoming draft capital that they can (if they want to) afford to trade away one or two prospects. However, there’s no way that happens in exchange for any “rental” expiring contract players. Furthermore, it won’t be to acquire any 30-something veterans. The only players Sweeney should be interested in are 20-something non-goalies that are also non-rentals.
It’s unlikely that players fitting that description will actually be available. We’ll see, though. I expect this to be a relatively quiet trade deadline for Boston, and that isn’t a bad thing.
No rush, they can always wait until the off season. I doubt there is anything they can do before Friday that will change them from being a bubble team. I think it is a reasonable question whether it is better to miss the playoffs this year for a better pick or be first round cannon fodder and a worse pick. I agree with you that it is good to hear what Sweeney had to say. I won't be upset if the deadline passes by and the Bruins don't do anything at all.
I think they should should hold. I don't think the group gets appreciably better for the sake of a playoff run; then having a piece they need to deal away later. Unless they bring in a piece that improves the club for the next two-three years. This group, as is, proves they can generate offense. To your point if they can shore up the back end, maybe a goaltender , perhaps a purchase and sale is a move. But it must be frugal.
I’m typing this with no sleep so I hope it’s understandable and not just a rambling comment of nonsense.
In my opinion is if u want a player like Thomas and parayko and the blues ask for hagens and maybe another prospect I believe you take it. Hagens is not proven in the nhl his stats as a center are horrible and he can’t win faceoffs in college. He is playing solely as a winger, if ur are the bruins are you willing to give up a winger like khustadinov or a ardvidson or a mittlestat , for hagens that you don’t know if he can play in the nhl and there is a reason he moved to the 7th pick when he was a projected 1st. I’m not necessarily a fan of hagens based on some interviews I seen after the draft I feel like he has an attitude problem and personality can hurt a team as bad as anything. Obviously my opinion carries no weight in the bruins world lol. I also believe that Lysell has an attitude problem and honestly is probably a main contributor in why he hasn’t been called up. I would rather the bruins trade him and get someone of value if the plans are for him to rot in providence Like I believe Lysell is doing.
I would like to the Bruins get creative and trade for a player like Bobby Brink who isn’t getting a fair shake in Philly but is a real good player. Seemingly, Sweeney is good at keeping a tight lip these days so I wouldn’t be shocked by an under the radar nab like that.
Also, while Casey Middlestat isn’t a tradition 3C, he could be targeted by a club looking for 3rd line help. He could play up to a 2nd line in a pinch and is good on the half wall for a 2nd unit PP.
Sweeney and Neely are what’s wrong with the bruins.
I hope they just go with what they have. Don't give up our high pics. We should have drafted Robert Thomas when we had they chance. We blew it big time and i hope someone lost their job over that blunder. The price for him is too high now.
Protect the future. If you can make the club better without disrupting the future then that’s a bonus.
Wait till next year
👍 Good stuff.
Thrilled that decisions to move current players are more difficult than anticipated at the beginning of the season.
That tells us something about this team. Easy decisions to move players out, means they stink!
So whether they stay or not, they are assets that absolutely contribute to the future of this team. And their own careers.
It's wise for Sweeney to hold off on having conversations with prospects, let's see how they do going into the NCAA tournament, that's part of their assessment.
I don't see any major surprises coming with Hagens unless he gets injured.
That was a good press conference. For the first time I saw very positive supportive comments out of Bruins fans about the future, but there's still using him as a whipping post for the past.
Based on comments under various videos,
I don't know what fans expect?
There were some seasons that were absolutely worth going all in,
I'll pick the two playoffs people remember most recently…
2019, 2023 -, we were all on board, that Evan Gold deal, Craig Smith for orlov, bertuzzi, Hathaway was amazing.
Nobody wanted Bergeron to retire, they called back Rask, Krecji and we were all in.
Sweeney would've taken flack for not supporting those teams going into playoffs
So let's put on our glasses while looking in the rearview mirror here – because we were all on board with going into debt, keeping Bergeron.
let's not pretend we're all smarter than Sweeney was.
I'm talking about general fans, there are exceptions.
Thanks for the update – no news is good news for now
Go B's!

Love this video
Have no faith in Bruin’s prospects. There are three Bruin’s draftees on the team. Our first round picks fail to make the team but other team’s lower picks do. There is a problem that needs to be corrected.
I think Peake is moved for a pick and to clear some salary. Poitras and Lohrei are used in a hockey trade to get a RHD or possibly a forward. However, with their timeline I think 1C has to be a priority whether they do it now or over the summer. If Sweeney thinks Thomas is the best fit for the Bruins, I think he goes all in. First round pick, Poitras, Lohrei, Dean and Mittelstadt because you'll need the money to bring Thomas in. I've watched Hagens a lot this year and he's not a 1C. Nor is he going to leave BC and immediately set the world on fire. He's most likely going to be a great wing, but he also needs time to learn the NHL game and Sturm's system, which is not easy. Fans need to pump the brakes. I also appreciated Sweeney's comments on Poitras yesterday. After listening to him heap praise on Poitras, I was like then why are we getting rid of him? However, I get it. There's simply no room for him on this roster. However, Sweeney is making it clear to teams that Poitras' worth has increased and he views him as a player ready to be part of a NHL roster immediately. Finally, right now I see the Blues, Flyers, Canucks and Rangers as the teams most likely to do a deal with the Bruins. Sweeney will undoubtedly prove me wrong though!
What do you think about the bruins potentially adding Owen Tippett and Risto in a package deal? Assuming Hagens and Dean are off the table.
