Rasmus Ristolainen REUNION one of many defenseman trade ideas for the Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres are in need of a depth defenseman ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline. There are lots and lots of ideas, some of which are former Sabres, including Rasmus Ristolainen. It’s not gone great for Risto in Philadelphia, but could finally being placed in a protected role mean better results for him on a third pair? With Marc Bergevin in Toronto tonight to watch the Flyers, he could be on the Sabres radar, and so could Brandon Carlo. Could the Maple Leafs defenseman be available to play that same third pair role in Buffalo?

Plus, a look at two giant defenseman in Seattle’s Jamie Oleksiak and Winnipeg’s Logan Stanley, one of which Sneaky Joe has completely soured on. And why Zach Whitecloud of the Flames might be the best idea out of any of them.

With Conor Timmins almost ready to return, is it possible the Sabres don’t make a trade and just trust Timmins to step back into that depth role?

  1. Kesselring is a good player but in no way does he fit in here, we need another D man and another top 6 forward. I doubt it happens, maybe a defenseman and hopefully that D man can fight or plays heavy, we don't have enough of those players. Robert Thomas would cost a lot but I would do it.

  2. No way does Risto come back. Kesserling and Timmons will round out the third pairing. I would take Mccabe back for a year though.

  3. No, not R&R. Calgary's Brayden Pachal would be ideal for the third pair. He's 26, 6'2" 202 lbs and he shoots right. He has more PIM than games played. He'd be the most physical d-man on the team. At worst he'd be a depth defenseman. I will be VERY disappointed if this regime repeats the error Darcy Regier made in 2005-06. He did not add a depth d-man, and what did we see in the playoffs – one Buffalo blueliner after another was lost as the postseason continued. Had Regier added a couple of depth d-men – and plenty were moved at the Trade Deadline at bargain basement prices – the Sabres would have bounced Carolina.

  4. Bigger problem is figuring out how to sign Tuch, Benson, Mals, and the other guys who are UFA’s and RFA’s next season.

We don’t want to lose Tuch or Benson. Get rid of greenway after playoffs

  5. I think Timmons metsa and kesselring is good enough for a 5-7 group of d men. Hopefully mrtka can keep developing and he can replace byrum two years from now if we can’t get byrum for a reasonable price. I’m loving the roster how it is and I still see a lot of growth left for guys on the team. Also the pipeline has a couple really good prospects and we still have our first round pick. I actually think letting this thing slow cook might be the best option

  6. Under NO circumstances do you bring back Risto or Myers. Risto said as much he never learned how to win and he never did win anything in his entire playing days. And Myers was nothing but a gentle giant here. Either one is bad karma you just don't bring back old socks period.
