I hate to be the cynic in the room, but the reality is that the Caps should trade their expiring contracts and call it quits on this season, rather than losing those assets for nothing. Unless one Eastern Conference team, against all odds, collapses spectacularly during the endrun, the Islanders currently project for 98 pts at their current pace, and the Bruins project for 100 pts. This effectively means that the Caps would have to win at least 16 of their last 20 games this season to have any chance of grabbing the last wild-card spot. I would be delighted if this post ends up ageing like old milk, but statistically speaking, the odds aren't in their favour.
I am still solidly behind Hendrix, finally starting to get in the stat sheet more regularly. Would he not be an effective replacement for Dowd? He can ride shotgun with Dowd and Beauvillier, learn some of the face off and defence tricks. He skates very well, seems to be eager to learn.
