Can the Sharks fix their blueline woes before their playoff hopes slip away for good? JD Young dissects a night plagued by mental errors, spotlighting costly turnovers by Mario Ferraro and Timothy Liljegren, and asking whether thrusting Kiefer Sherwood onto the top line is derailing offensive chemistry for stars like Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith.

Key talking points include Michael Misa’s impressive showing and the urgent need for his expanded ice time, Dustin Wolf’s stellar goaltending against San Jose, and why the Sharks’ defensive struggles are undermining both goalies and forwards. 1. Sharks need to take Šmits he is the most NHL ready D-Man send him to the A next year and call him up at the end of the year

  2. What do you think the % is that Grier flips Sherwood? Pierre Lebrun (tends to have good info on the Sharks) said his sources say the Sharks are willing to flip Sherwood if they can't get an extension done, and that it is likely this happens if they can't agree on one. I'm going with 60% chance we see Sherwood gone.

  3. Google AI says Eklund, Ferraro, and the Oiler’s 26’ 1st rd pick could possibly fetch Brandt Clarke from the Kings.

Kings just lost Fiala (who Eklund can replace), just traded for Panarin, & Kopitar is almost done. They’re going all in, they don’t have a choice.

Ferraro is an ok middle-pair D to semi-replace Clarke for LA, Eklund semi-replaces Fiala, AND they get a late 26’ first rd pick (which doesn’t affect us cuz we have our own 1st rd pick this yr.. on top of the deepest prospect pool in the league already).

I’ll take the 6’2”, 23 yr old, 8th overall pick, right-shot offensive D-man Clarke over Eklund, Ferraro, and Edm’s 26’ first rd pick all day. Fuckin throw in Sherwood, or Muk, or similar.. if you have to.

In fact.. that’s a really good offer for Clarke, and I feel like both teams would be happy with the return of Eklund, Sherwood, Ferraro, & Oilers 26’ first rd pick for Brandt Clarke.
(Time to start consolidating assets to improve/rebuild the defense)

  4. Seeing JD crash out re-living the so-called "defence" in this game hit me hard. It just sucks to watch.

  5. Sherwood trade was madness. He is what he is. Hes good in a third line role, we dont need third line wingers. There are so many, ok they may not be quite as good as sherwood can be but who cares 3rd line wingers arent more of a priority than your whole defense. We need to cut our losses and flip him because he will want a big extension. With the young core also neeeding contracts the cap space will dwindle away and we dont need to be giving away signigicant cap space to a 3rd line winger

  6. The only glass I see half full now is the Sharks feaft assets look better going into the deadline and might push them to the front of the line in some hard negotiations

  7. I'm all for not tanking, there's not point in tanking anymore, but I'm also 100% convinced that our playoff chances are off. We'll probably finish 5-10 somewhere in that range and yea.. But I have to agree, we have our superstar, we need players NOW. With terms. Macklin needs good players to play with, and Warso needs to stop benching good players for the sake of "identity" also. Even if we draft Verhoff, he's not a superstar Dman likfe Schaefer or Makar or Hughes, and he's not there before 3 years at least, and Macklin needs players NOW. And I seriously hope they haven't ruined Mukh with this year because this would be a big blow
I won't cheer for us to lose like previous years, but I know the odds of making it are against us now, and it is what it is

  8. Reaves playing and Regenda out is baffling. And I agree JD, breaking the Smith Celebrini line never worked before, when they do that, they lose games so I don’t understand why he keeps doing it. And it messes up the other lines like the Wennberg line that was doing fine. I have the same thoughts as you, Sherwood isn’t a first line guy, he’s slower than Celebrini and Smith and doesn’t play the same kind of hockey as them. Put Graf on the first line with Smith and Celebrini, they were doing great before. I gotta be honest and say Celebrini wasn’t bad but he was off this game. I see people on twitter hesitating saying this because he’s a star player but it’s true, he was off. I’ll give him a pass because he’s probably tired and jet lagged. Warso once again not believing our young guys, on of our future btw, Misa was great tonight and Warso still didn’t have him on 6 on 5 but he put Sherwood and Toffoli there lol We need Regenda, Gaudette, Mukhamadullin playing. Not Reaves or Goodrow. This loss is Warso’s fault like the last Oilers loss we had. They need to start calling up Barracuda guys too. Cagnoni and Noah Allan would be better than whatever the dmen vets are doing.

  9. Have to flip Sherwood. Don’t care if they get less in return. Two wrongs don’t make a right and if anything this would just be a learning lesson for the staff.

  10. Overall the team looked like they had three weeks between games. Came out with a lot of juice, played sloppy, made serious miscues that were costly, ran out of gas, and the coaching staff had a major brain fart.

First – I am a fan and do not have the coaches experience (and neither have any of us), I have not sat through the meetings, been there for all the practices, workouts and a myriad of other things they do every day as they interact with the players.

And I was not on the bench to hear the players and get a better idea of what they were thinking, saying, etc. We do not know 5% of what they know and are making conclusions without all the data.

    – BUT – from a fans perspective moving Celebrini away from Smith was a WHAT?! As there were other decisions that were head scratchers.

On the flip side, with how the team steadily got worse as the second came to a close and the ineffectiveness of most of his lines, had Warso done nothing and lost we fans would be asking why he did not do anything.

In this case, this fan, would have preferred making different moves. Maybe shifting Sherwood off the top line and moving Eklund, Toffoli, or Graf up and slot Sherwood in the line where the other winger came from.

We as fans do need to give Warso some leeway as he is in his second year as head coach with a team that (although has improved talent) is fundamentally flawed, has almost half his roster with three or less years of NHL experience and has had massive changeover.

  11. I’m far from an expert but I think some ruthless decisions need to be made soon to get us moving forward. Love the Sharks.

  12. Grier had the chance to get Quinn Hughes and he blew it. He instead wasted two 2nd rounders on a third-line grinder at best. Seeing what Minnesota gave up to get Quinn, Grier could have done the same with some of the forward prospects, those two rounders, either of Ferraro and/or Lili. Drafting a defenseman this draft or next will not help the peaking timeline of Mac, Smith, Misa.
