As someone who read the 2nd book of the story (vague spoiler), there is NO WAY season 2 will benefit nhl in any capacity. In fact, it might do the opposite.

As far as the Team USA stuff goes, I know from my own experience, that I was able to compartmentalize cheering for Tom Wilson, Brad Marchand and other Florida Panthers playing for Team Canada, so perhaps the fans in Buffalo are able to compartmentalize as well.
