FFS there is no number controversy 😂, It's called respect, players with seniority get their number it's that simple there is 0 ego involved and in the NHL it's the same but if both places are established the new guy on the team takes what is available or he can negotiate with the number holder if they so choose, when Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic played for team Canada Sakic wore 18 and Used wore 19 and there was no ❓ because Stevie Y was in the league longer and Sakic also modelled had a game after Stevie because he was a fan. No egos on teams where they wear the flag no matter what country it is, it is the morality and hockey code
