AM is playing with good players at the Olympics. He plays with McMahon who is good but not great and Domi who is good in flashes but loves to give the puck away most of the year. Why are we picking on a great player when we really need to upgrade half the forwards just to be better than replacement level.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think the US takes gold.. Defensive forward group. Best defense in the tournamnet. Best goalies in the tournament. If their goalies play to their level, this game is a trap game. Our D has been horrible and the ice will get worse before the end. Which is better for defensive teams.
If they let traverliving screw with this team on trades for sure they won`t make the playoffs – leave the team alone and let them play without trade fears – if anything get rid of traverliving – as for matthews if we could get McDavid for him that would be a great step forward–so if they could not get it done with marner what makes you think they can get it done with matthews? – have you not learned that individuals playing as such don`t win as much as a team that is a team – that plays as a unit and not individuals –
The criticisms is not because Matthews is a Leaf , it's his playoffs performances he has had in the past NINE YEARS!!!! The GUY is labeled as a LOSER!!!
These Olympics proves to me Matthews is not a driver. He requires strong playmakers to be a good player. He is still slow and lacks grit. Maybe the Leafs need a top-end playmaker on his line.

NHL pro athletes playing against Olympic hockey players who are in the majority working manufacturing, warehousing, mining, carpentry, electrical work, custodial work, agriculture, logging, landscaping, food processing, waste collection and disposal, construction, shipping, lawyers, plumbers, bakers, etc … Boasting about NHLers rocking the score sheet over blue collar workers!
Superstars can only be superstars with great players around them. Matthews had Mitch setting him up that's why they were shining. Now Matthews don't have that and Mitch is on the line where he doesn't really have that so that's why they are both hurting. Put both players on align where there's chemistry and both guys will be top-notch again. I have no doubts that Matthews will be on top of his game once they get a proper person to play with them and the same with Mitch because we're watching it happen when they are playing with great players. And I for one not wanting Marner gone but there's no way with the cap that we could have held on to him. So yes he had to go but not the way people wanted him ran out of town. Those who say that he wanted to go two seasons ago I wonder why because after the damn playoffs he was always the person blamed and no one else. Yes he got his points up front but last time I checked their 30 other guys to carry the weight but he always got the blame so if I was him out of giving Toronto the middle finger and say kiss my ass on the way out so I laughed at the fact that we got nothing for him because I if I was him would have done the same thing. 30 guys on a team and I'm the only guy that gets thrown under the bus even though I have led out of the core 4 in playoff points. The whole freaking team has never shown up just as they are right now even though it has changed a lot the still don't have that let's get it done attitude or that killer instinct. Problem is not Matthews it's not really it was never Mitch or Johnny it's something to do with this team maybe the media who knows because so many players that are good come here and they just forgot how to play like Carlo. But then he came from Boston and there's a lot of pressure there so who the heck knows maybe this team is actually cursed. But we here we will all die with the blue and white blood in us so GLG!!!!!!

Honestly, why would anyone want to play on Toronto? The fans went insane on Mitch Marner. They should have traded Matthews and kept Marner.
Like most Leafs fans, I've been following Auston Matthews's performance since he joined the team as a rookie and got 4 goals in his first game vs Ottawa; he is an elite talent, and was a sight for sore eyes for all the long-suffering Leafs fans.
That said, anyone with a pair of functioning eyes can see that he isn't playing as well in Toronto this year as in the past. In his first year Matthews didn't have Marner either, and he was dominant on the ice; he hasn't been anywhere near that level this year. Maybe that is due to an injury or a lack of mental toughness, I don't know. What I do know is in the past Matthews and company haven't been able to raise their collective game once the playoffs start and have been punted every year. Prior to this season, every regular season they do very well and then don't get it done at playoff time. Every Stanley Cup winning team must be able to raise their game to the next level to win.
That's not all on Matthews; the team is only as good as what the GM builds and the coach puts on the ice every game. What they are lacking now is a true #1 defenceman who can bomb shots from the point and move the puck efficiently out of the defensive zone. The team gets scored on a ton because they can't get the puck out of their zone, and that may have more to do with systems than talent, but high-end talent would certainly help.
I didn't like the way Matthews became the Captain at Tavares's expense. The team should have let John's contract expire and then named Matthews as captain. I thought it was classless, especially considering how much of a team player and class act Tavares has been in Toronto.
I'm glad Matthews is dominating at the Olympics, and I hope he brings that mentality back to Toronto when he returns.
