I never understood why anyone…anyone…wants a puck. Like collecting steel nuts. If anyone needs to look at a puck to be reminded that he scored 900 goals….and the one next to it to remind him he scored 800 goals….he's got brain damage.
If you take into account Gretzky's WHA season. Then his goal total is 940. 894 NHL + 46 WHA. And Gretzky still has the overall record. 894 + 46 + 122 + 10 = 1072 goals. Ovechkin still has a ways to go to get the actual overall record.
But on the other hand, back in the 1980s, the defense wasn't allowed to mug and rough up the offensive players as much as they do now.
