There Will Never Be Another Abdullah the Butcher

Abdullah The Butcher wasn’t just a wrestler. He was a walking horror movie.

Long before hardcore wrestling became mainstream… before ECW, before deathmatches, before barbed wire and light tubes… there was one man who made arenas genuinely afraid to sit in the front row.

From the bloody territories of Puerto Rico and Japan to Madison Square Garden and WCW pay-per-views, Abdullah The Butcher carved his legend the hard way. Literally.

Forks. Chairs. Spikes. Wild brawls that spilled into the crowd. Matches that looked less like wrestling and more like riots.

While clean-cut babyfaces like Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, and Bob Backlund represented heroes, Abdullah represented chaos. A silent, unpredictable monster who didn’t cut promos. He just cut foreheads.

Promoters called him when they needed fear. When they needed violence. When they needed a heel so dangerous that fans believed someone might not make it out alive.

He battled Carlos Colón in Puerto Rico’s bloodiest wars, terrorized Bruiser Brody, clashed with Terry Funk, Stan Hansen, Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, Giant Baba, and Andre the Giant, and left scars — both physical and legendary — across every territory he touched.

His forehead became a roadmap of scars. His fork became infamous. His matches became the blueprint for hardcore wrestling decades before Mick Foley, Sabu, Terry Funk’s ECW run, or Cactus Jack made it cool.

This is the story of Abdullah The Butcher. The Madman from the Sudan. The Bloodiest Heel in wrestling history. The attraction so dangerous that some countries and promotions wouldn’t even book him.

  1. when I was stationed in Japan I saw Abdullah and the sheik vs the funk brothers in one of the bloodiest battles I had ever seen live.

  2. great job!! i'm from montreal, abby was often here, scaring the shit out of me as a kid. btw, abby & brody had way more than 45 matches against each other, probably closer to 200. abby's first ever face-turn was in montreal with brody as the heel. i was there for one match, & brody, while coming down the aisle, decided to go for a stroll into the crowd, swinging that chain around. i never ran 20 feet away so fast in my life, before or since. thanks for the great vid, keep em comin' !!

  3. I didn't know abdullah the butchers gimmick was a work until i was a grown man LOL and started watching youtube shoot interviews .

  4. When i was a kid, my buddies and I were huge wrestling fans. We bought those magazines and searched for guys like Abdullah the Butcher! We actually believed the gimmick!!! Good stuff

  5. I met "Abby" at a fan event in 2006, and was legit surprised by how soft-spoken and polite he was. I remembered him from the magazines back in the 1970s and was legit terrified by him. That powdered substance that he threw in his opponents' eyes was reputedly cause permanent blindness. My 12 year old self was horrified that the Madman From Sudan was even allowed to wrestle. I'm shocked that he was illiterate, because he understood his business very well. "My job was to generate money. If you can do that, you won't have many other worries." Thank you for this video. I learned a lot about a legendary figure.

  6. Too much "B-Roll" that have absolutely no connection to Abdullah – when there is thousands of hours of footage of Abdullah available. . . . . . Like at 9:21 . . . Andre v. Killer Khan? This video is about Abdullah The Butcher.

  7. There's another guy that puts up a hell of an argument for most violent wrestler ever and he tagged with and fought Abdullah many times back in the day, THE ORIGINAL SHEIK.

  8. Never forget when New Jack bladed the 16 year old kid, beat Juicy Joe with a bat, and tried to legitimately kill Vic Grimes in a Scaffold match.

  9. The Wild Man From The SUDAN AT 490 thousand pounds!😂😂 Dusty Rhodes promo on Abdullah Championship Wrestling from Georgia NWA😱😱😂😂

  10. He was a bullshitter and scum bag. Listen to what Kamala said he did to black wrestlers in Japan.

  11. Facts, he had wars in Puerto Rico with Carlito Colon too violent to show in USA TV LMAO He was a scary guy and him and Carlito have the scars on their foreheads from these wars for us fans! I just learned he was African American and Canadian just now, I honestly thought he was from Sudan 😂 that's how good he play this character. They should have an Award named after him for the best wrestler who has the most extreme cage matches.

  12. The more I hear about old school wrestlers the more I think many were mentally ill.

  13. Back in the day when I was a kid I was fascinated and frightened of Abdullah and The Sheik. Of course I was young and these were the days of kayfabe, so I didn't know any better!😆 Like tigermachine stated earlier, I believed the gimmicks, and I would search out anything on Abby and The Sheik, which mostly amounted to any wrestling mags with them in it.

  14. This dude is the dude yo I got his autograph when he had wrestled Terry funk for 3pw , I even have a picture of him biting me in the head… 💪🏻
