Shanahan stated MLSE's measure of success was to make the playoffs. I know Pelly was very aggressive in his statement on what was expected of the Leafs, but everyone thought they were a playoff team. MLSE is probably willing to believe this was an outlier year and the present Leafs lineup is a playoff team. So why would they want to trade useful players for future capital and risk the playoffs next year?

There are 25 games left including 6 til the trade deadline. You have a number of core players still I their prime. Do you rash it all and roll the dice hoping all draft picks work out? Do you make minor changes and see if you can make a run? No one predicted that the Panthers would crash and burn this year or that Buffalo would suddenly be way better. Consider all the talk about Edmonton picking up our good players when they are only 1 point ahead of the Leafs. If they were in the Atlantic they would be no where near the playoffs so why does anyone think that they are one winger away from the cup this year? The Leafs should communicate their long and short term strategy at some point perhaps at the trade deadline.
