The Edmonton Oilers were one of the most profitable franchises in all of sports last year, despite being considered less valuable than dozens of other clubs, Forbes magazine’s annual analysis suggests.
The Oilers were estimated to have earned roughly $341.1 million — $244 million US — in operating income last year, tying the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams for third on the magazine’s top-20 list of most profitable sports teams in 2025.
“On one hand it might feel like a surprise. But then, if you actually live in the city, you realize it really shouldn’t come across as much of a surprise, because this is what we’re all about — supporting the things we love,” Mayor Andrew Knack told CBC News Saturday, noting that Edmonton is the continent’s northernmost city with a population greater than 1 million people.
“The Oilers are part of our blood, they’re part of our DNA,” Knack said. “But it also shows that it’s not just the Oilers; it’s how we embrace sport, how we embrace arts and culture in this city. It’s really exciting to see.”

I am saying this as respectfully as I can as a Flames fan: It’s because of all of the degenerate oilers fans whaling bets in the gigantic 50/50 draws every game.

Im a flames fan living in Red Deer. About an hour and a half south, lots of oil money and crazy fans that I grew up with, It was always 98 percent oilers fans… think about it they have so much of Alberta driving like 3 hours to go Mcdavid, plus international travel… even ive gone to see Mcdavid vs Crosby, plus 50 dollars, for two hot dogs and two pops will turn that profit.
Lordy the Oilers must be fleecing their fans out of every penny they own considering the size of their market. And I mean fleecing them on everything from tickets to keychain sales. Granted the Oilers have fans across Canada and all the oil money in Alberta and its a good economy but still. Thats some heady company. I'll really be amazed when Winnipeg becomes more valuable LOL

Profits are a funny thing with determining valuation. If you had to borrow 3 billion to buy the team at 5%. Thats 150million in interest per year. Valuation in sports and many businesses are based on potential future valuations rather than profit.
Farm land is an extreme example. It might cost 50k to buy an acre today. But you might only profit 100$ an acre per year. That doesn't pay the mortgage. But the bank and investors are wanting land because it only goes up in value. The use or profitability doest actually matter much to them.
That with the weak Canadian dollar …
