  1. This year doesn’t seem to be the one for the cup. If it’s true that we’ve never seen Laine in the habs uniform and that he is now, habs should use the rest of the year to give him a hard look. Especially given that he’ll be FA this summer.

Best case scenario: a Shaun Monahan redo. 1 year extension at at 2 M$ for a fully healthy Laine. An from there make an informed decision in a year from now

  2. I have 0 interest in moving Laine unless we have another trade lined up for a bonafide top 6 player.

We currently are missing 2 legit top 6 pieces still(a winger and a center). We've been incredibly lucky with the health of our top 6 this season, next season might not be the same story. So 1 key injury and we could be missing 3 top 6 players. I'd much rather hold onto Laine and give him a cheap contract next season, the guy's capable of potting 40+ goals and 70 points.

  3. If Patrik Laine is this expendable and they want his contract off the books for its NHL cap hit, then why not send him to Laval via waivers and see if someone just claims him as opposed to a trade with retention and offering picks to entice a move? Is there a rule that his cap hit would violate the ceiling by activating him, as required, before he could be waived to send to Laval?

I say this, of course, on the caveat that moving out his contract is exclusively based on needing the room to make a hockey trade to improve our team. If not, why bother? He expires anyway.

  4. With the return of Evans in the lineup and the fact that MTL now also has Danault, and the eventual return of Newhook. Veleno looks be the man out for Newhoook I assume.

About Laine possibly coming back and how would he fit in the team? As much as I like Gally, he is the most likely player that a Patrick Laine could replace on occasion to rest Gally a bit (being a winger, right handed, not playing PK, not playing in end of game to protect leads situations (as would Laine also not do). But Laine could be on the PP 2 and some PP1 that Gally would not. I see Laine as a Mike Hoffman type, very one dimensional, but that dimension (shot) is elite. So they should do anything they can to try to use it.
Basically rotate Laine and Gally during the last stretch, like they have been doing with Struble and Xhekaj.

And if Laine replaces Gally with Danault and Anderson, he might even benefit from their more stable defensive play to force some goal scoring on that line.

Thats the ONLY way I see Laine come into the lineup for the end of the season. But if MTL already crossed him off the lineup, and can’t trade him without it being costly to the team, then just put him on waivers… if no team pick him up, he goes to Laval, or just does not play. If a team picks him up, MTL looses nothing more than the player himself. Otherwise just wait for the season to end and he comes off the books for next season anyway.

  5. Why is everyone ready to dump on Laine because he's not a good fit but with the same breath say we need a top 6 forward. Talking just to talk.

  6. Bro what is this take even. If LA gets Laine then what? 4th line? Look at LAs wingers. Do you really think they need or even want another.

  7. Got it…Lane doesn't seem to have a role in Montreal (the Canadiens need a physical puck-getter, not a premier shooter)… Utah Mammoth, NY Islanders and LA Kings (or maybe even Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames) could be likely destinations for Laine if he is traded… If he is not traded, I am sure we will be fine and we can figure it out over the summer…. But no Kadri! MSL will loathe his poor discipline, and we don't need his way around our youngsters, showing them the wrong things.

  8. I honestly think this move to acquire Laine was a rushed pressure move and like I said from the get go was not going to work. Now we're stuck with a guy with little value and a high pay cheque and will likely now have to retain salary.

  9. Montreal was the perfect fit for him . Not sure what other teams would work . As said in one of the comments that maybe a return to Liga could be a likely destination for him next year .

  10. "Question for Marco: To better understand deadline cap space—as we can see on PuckPedia, the Hurricanes have $40.5M in space. Can they really add $40.5M worth of NHL contracts from the trade deadline until the end of the season? (That’s almost five Patrik Laine contracts!)"

  11. And you wonder why media pundits should never be a GM for team as they would suck. The problem is Laine's cap hit and think it might be a factor keeping him out of the lineup. If they somehow still have him around playoff time, they would have to shuffle the lineup to take his cap hit into consideration.
