What if…

What if Carey Price were active for the Montreal Canadiens this season? In this video, I break down the question using real numbers. Using Price’s 2020–21 performance as a baseline, I estimate how many goals the Canadiens might have prevented and how that could translate into additional wins. I also explore the other side of the equation: how carrying Price’s $10.5M cap hit might have affected roster decisions, from depth signings to larger moves. The result is a realistic look at how Price could have changed the season—not dramatically, but in ways that matter.

  1. They would likely be tied with Tampa Bay for the divisional lead or slightly ahead if the Goaltending was hovering around 900.

  2. Good luck to your wife, I had two removed and went back to work afterwards, freezing coming out was a little painful. My brother got his 4 done and had to take 3 days off work.

  3. A goalie's stats are directly related to the team around him. Ken Dryden was a great goaler, but he also had Robinson, Savard, and Lapointe in front of him, who fed breakout passes to Lafleur.

Price would probably have even better stats with this group. However, to be fair to Dobes and Montembeault, there have been many nights when the team hung them out to dry as well.

  4. well the thing was also that Carey was often able to make impossible saves and in the playoffs its worth way more than any save percentage ine the whole team sees it like a winning sign

  5. Hopefully that last huge game by Monty is the start of something, not too sure if he'll keep it up or not judging by how inconsistent he's been but fingers crossed

  6. It's a catch 22, with Price they wouldn't be bad enough to get the picks to get guys like Slaf and Demidov. Certainly, if they could have this team with Price at .901 save % they would be better. Price was an excellent penalty killer, elite puck handler, elite rebound control. They would give Tampa a run for the money. I still have a lot of hope for the goalies. I think if the team could be better at PK, that alone would improve their GAA and tack on several wins

  7. Price Deserved a cup more than any player I can possibly think of. This video truly does hurt me.

  8. i often wondered what would be if Price was still here…..we were spoiled for sooooooo long. i feel like it was almost taken for granted that goaltending was a non issue. But i mean imagine!! i know you ran the numbers and 20 extra goals ect. but its the intangibles that made carey a monster. Probably one of if not the best puck control and distrubition goalie in his time. The poise he had in net, and like u said he was just plain in their heads. If Carey decided there was no more pucks going by him it was over. Man with the lineup we have now and Carey in net we wou;d already be a top 3-5 team in the league and dare i say a cup contender…..so ya i miss the guy wish i could've seen him tend the goal for so many more years….Great video! loved it!

  9. Sorry to burst your bubble, these are the stats for 2020-21

In the last 21 games of the 56 game schedule Price played in one (1) game.

Primeau played in 4 games with a 84.9% sv, won 1 game, lost 2, & OT ..1 had 93 shots, saved 79, was scored on 14 times, his avg shots on goal was 23.25

Allen played in 29 games with a 90.7% sv, won 11, lost 12, & OT ….5 had 817 shots, saved 741, was scored on 76 times, Montreal was shut out 3 times, his avg shots on goal were 28.17

Price played in 25 games with a 90.1% sv, won 12, lost 7, & OT ….5 had 659 shots, saved 594, was scored on 65 times, Montreal was shut out 1 time, his avg shots on goal was 26.36

The league save percent average was 92.2 and Montreal's was 90.9%

Actually Allen, the back-up goalie had better stats than Price that year and Allen was the goalie who pulled the team across the playoff line.

  10. Price's puck handling with this team would be absolutely terrifying to play against, too. Imagine the transition Canadiens with Price saucering a pass up to the red line like he has done at any point the team has to be worried that your dump in just turns to a break the other way.

  11. Let's not underestimate the importance of goaltending. The OilersĀ haven'tĀ been able to win the cup so far, although they are so incredibly talented, because of their poor goaltending. The Sens had a miserable losing stretch when Ullmark was injured: now that he's back, they are winning again. If the team in front of Price had been as talented as the one we have now, I'm pretty sure he would have won a couple of Stanley Cups. Now we have the team, but we don't have Price anymore. Our goalies can do the job, more or leess, but I feel the Habs will become real contenders when Fowler will be ready to step in.

  12. I didn’t want to watch this one, as the topic of ā€œwhat if Price had this team in front of himā€ is indeed a little painful… but I ended up enjoying it. Interesting perspective, I think you covered pretty much everything that needed to be covered, so, good job on the topic… šŸ‘šŸ‘

  13. I think it’s really important to look at league wide save percentage during that year with price, also looking at league wide, save percentage this year

  14. Blueberry muffins

Where is my "Bonsoir !!" at the end ???? man, the onlympic cut us 3 weeks of the habs, you can also cut us off, you cant do that !!! šŸ˜‰

  15. Great video. Montembault had a .902 save percentage last year, .903 the year prior. It's what makes his performance this year so frustrating in that if we had our current goalie playing like this we would be in a better position. Pulling for him for sure.

    Also, chocolate chip cookies.

  16. I was literally just thinking about this yesterday.

    Great analysis.

On another note: we all stare into screens too much, and scroll online too much. I got good advice recently from scientific American:

    1- search, don’t scroll
    And
2- set a time limit (as if you were in a casino)

    GHG!

  17. Great perspective Whiskey. I’m very sentimental when it comes to Carey Price. What a legend he was. I feel like the back half of the season might see a bit more stability in net. The new goalie coach seems to be having an impact. Second or third highest scoring team with improving goaltending…I can only see the team getting better!

  18. With 20 less goals… can we count how many games where the first shot on net was a goal,
