The Carolina Hurricanes won 4-3 over the Ottawa Senators on February 3, 2026. Jordan Staal’s game-winning goal, with just more than 5 minutes to play helped the Canes to a 4-3 win over Ottawa as they extend their points streak to 9 straight games (7-0-2). Staal’s 14th of the season was the 8th time that Staal has given Carolina the lead with a goal. Seth Jarvis scored twice, Sebastian Aho added a goal and 2 assists, and Brandon Bussi won for the 22nd time in 26 NHL starts. It was another game in which the Hurricanes weren’t necessarily the better team, though Carolina definitely played well and with a lot of energy. The Canes have just one more game — Thursday at Madison Square Garden — before the Olympic break.

The Canes continue to look ripe for the taking in the postseason. If they were in the Atlantic Division I'm not convinced that they'd survive the first round of the playoffs? The roster as currently configured continues to lack sandpaper & physicality especially in the top six. Team looks like world beaters against the NHL doormats & stanley cup pretenders against both physical teams & the elite. Butter soft in their own end both in the D & neutral zones & their PK has been mediocre all season. Either Walker or Ghost need to sit as soon as Legault's AHL conditioning stint ends after the Olympic break. How long is the never ending Kotkaniemi soap opera going to linger? Dude plays like a disinterested twelve year old skimming stones in Pullen Park. The time to move on was three years ago but but every TDL we were treated to Don Waddell infamous & annoying "we like our group" retort.
This far into the season, the team identity is pretty much set…. and I'm not feeling good about the losing of leads. It's a problem. I guess the positive spin is… having a sound defensive team with good goaltending hasn't gotten them to the cup finals. This year it seems like we will have a poor defensive squad in terms of locking down leads and teams in the third but amazing goal tending. Maybe it's different this year.
Serious cup contender?
Jarvis-Aho-Svechnikov
Ehlers-(new 2C)-Blake
Carrier-Staal-Martinook
Hall-Stankoven-Jankowski/KK/Robinson (whatever)
Canes aren’t post season ready, quite small & lacking constancy from some main players. PP needs to improve.
Hopefully we see playoff- Svech & Bussi keeps up his video game like goal tending.
