Why Auston Matthews legendary regular season might not mean anything in the playoffs

  1. No they’re the leafs when they lose to Boston it will be just another disappointment of a year….the coach needs to go

  2. The Rocket isn't a curse. It just takes more than a big scorer to win the Cup, great players play for bad or mediocre teams all the time, and there at least 15 teams in a given postseason that don't have the year's Richard winner. It's basic numbers.

  3. Individual awards are useless and the team needs to start to figure out how to win in the playoffs. I absolutely hate the leafs but I feel for the stupid fans that pay out the ass for tickets each and every night for some reason. Stop going and prove a point that enough is enough

  4. If your team needs a guy to score 70 goals in the regular season, you don't have the team makeup to win the Cup, especially in the cap era.
    1) 70g scorers tend to make way too much money and thus have way too big a cap hit
    2) Cup winning teams are all about rolling 4 lines and causing mismatches…a whole team effort
    3) If you can generate 70 goals from one player, very, very likely your team is too offensively focused; the modern NHL is about defense and scoring timely goals, especially from all of your lines.
    4) Your 1st line center on a Cup team shouldn't have more goals than assists; a Cup 1C should be able to take advantage of his wingers to score goals (thus racking up assists) and not constantly be the deepest forward trying to put the puck into the net; Cup winning teams all have excellent 2 way centers that are good at faceoffs and defense while taking advantage of wingers for goal scoring most of the time…that doesn't mean you can't score as a center but you should be passing and keeping the opposing offensive line under control in partnership with your stay at home defenseman and your goaltender.

  5. The Leafs and their Management have put Matthews individual stats ahead of the organization.
Thats the reason they have nothing in the tank…
Every other team was getting ready for the real season to begin by resting their big guns, but the leafs were overplaying their top guys to hit a goal total to which they failed😳now they are paying for that decision bigtime..Bye Keefe and Shanny👋

  6. Auston Mathews is playing for THE CURSED TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS him winning any trophy is a blessing but a cup lol lets not get ahead of ourselves😮

  7. Hockeys a team sport, you can't assume your team is going to win because of the success of one player. Especially if your team spends a crazy amount of their budget to keep that player. Superstars are great assets but that means nothing without a great team built around them.

  8. Winning the Rocket is nice, but if it's not the Stanley Cup, it's not a team win. He'll get a bump in his next contract, but not as much if he had help his team win the Cup

  9. He sits off to the side and waits for the puck to be fed to him. Occasionally he leaves to do a commercial or collect his lottery winnings. Man we are stupid

  10. Just like how mcdavid scored 60+. The team didn’t do good in the playoffs and I noticed he didn’t shoot as well this year but his assist jumped through the roof so I can see he’s trying to get better at making the best play which he is. And maybe that’s what Matthew’s needs to do

  11. The thing about statistics like this is that the odds you will win the cup suck. People said that winning the presidents trophy is a curse for example and yet statistically if you won the presidents trophy you have better odds of winning the cup. That being said, often the reason that people who win this trophy do not end up winning the cup is because to score the most goals it’s likely your teammates aren’t scoring much of their own. Unless you are a completely dominant player who can essentially score at will this puts you in and unfortunate position.

Also the leafs can’t play into a 1-2-2 without getting smothered but that’s a whole other can of worms.

  12. "Can the Leafs break this Rocket curse?"

No. Definitely no. Instead, like usual, Matthews DISAPPEARED in the playoffs.

Note, the Leafs played better as a team in the games Matthews had his upset tummy.

  13. This may sound cute but it's silly. If your calculus is correct, The Leafs would have had a better chance at the Prize, if Mathews scored 60 goals or 50. What I believe is the Leafs have a better chance to win a Cup if ShanaPLAN Shanahan and Mr Big (Tanenbaum) were removed from anything to do with hockey club. It's painfully obvious to me Mr Big is only concerned with profit, but MLSE is a money making machine and will be enormously profitable even if the Leafs can't win the Stanley Cup in…say…57 years! Therein lies the problem, until the li,es of Mr Big gives a damn, the Organization will be fine with failure in Hockey Operations. Oh, can ANYONE explain to me what the ShanaPLAN actually was…anyone?

  14. This is not a curse. Believe it or not, a contending teams top player who is scoring too many goals isn’t good for reaching Stanley cup status. Teams with their best player being a sniper build whos looking for goals instinctually on offense too much becomes one dimensional in the playoffs against the best opponents and goalies. Players like this tend to rely too much on their teammates for their own success and this can dwindle a team when your top player is of this playstyle. This is not the case for superstars who are known as playmakers(Mcdavid, kucherov, mackinnon, even draisital). This playstyle naturally improves surrounding players performance based on the fact that usually the star player is the one generating offense for others. This effect can ignite a team.

All of this is the reason other superstars have had so much success in the playoffs and MUCH better numbers (reg season and playoffs). Matthews highest point total in regular season is 107 I believe while every other superstar is 140+. Mackinnon, kucherov both have rings. Mcdavid, draisitl are two of the greatest playoff performers of all time. The stats don’t lie.

If the leafs want to win a cup. Marner needs to step up in playoffs because he’s their best true playmaker and he can be elite. I promise everyone that the team will have more success if he takes that step. Or if matthews turns into an elite dynamic playmaker while retaining his scoring touch for the right times.
