Welcome back to PuckTalk MTL for a heated Montreal Canadiens post-game breakdown after a controversial finish that has fans furious.
In this post-game episode, we react to how the Canadiens were ROBBED in overtime, as a missed call directly led to a Minnesota Wild victory, overshadowing an otherwise hard-fought performance by the Habs.
We break down the decisive OT sequence, the missed penalty that sparked the debate, and how officiating impacted the outcome. Was the call missed? Should the whistle have gone? We analyze the play frame by frame, discuss NHL standards in overtime, and explain why this moment changed the game. Beyond the controversy, we also dive into Montreal’s overall effort, late-game execution, and the chances they created to end it themselves.
For Habs fans, we focus on the positives to build on, lessons learned in tight games, and what this result means moving forward. For Wild fans, we examine how Minnesota capitalized on opportunity and closed out the win. For NHL and hockey fans, this episode tackles the bigger picture—officiating consistency, overtime rules, and how razor-thin margins decide games.

We hold our position. That’s all that matters.
Also: screw the refs.
The missed call on Demindov is crazy
Dobes 8-0-2🎉🎉
How many times have refs screwed habs' opponents this season vs. Times refs screwed habs
And ppl want to get rid of gally , he scores when u need a goal
Send Dobes. Teams don’t pull out goalies for one close loss. Monty is the backup now he had many shots, Dobes is/has earned his place.
Idk if it’s just me but I find slaf is caught flat footed a lot, or not moving around enough, kinda laid back and yes I know he just got a goal but it’s been like that all month. IMO.
So we have only 5 defenders ?
The difference between dobes and Monty is that on every bad shot dobes also makes a grade A save
Your idiot about Dobes …Monty lover?
It was a pick. Overall the reffing in the nhl is on a treajectory from bad to worse to terrible to reprehensible
Coach are you trying to say that the Canadiens even for a minute dominated Minnesota ?
Come on bud it’s broad daylight here when these games are played we must see it differently !
BTW the first goal was an Eric Raymond legacy! Dobes was cheating to the shooter far side of the net left open!
There's no doubt. It's a pick.
Dach had a game as well. Dobes was good but not great. There were uncalled picks all night. Refs need to be impartial but there has always been a power dynamic going on where they feel they are entitled to give and take calls on a whim. Deferring to more experienced players is my pet peeve – absolutely ridiculous!! Colin Campbell was the worst and set the stage for terrible management of refs which continues to this day. I think how they are directed should be a matter of public record.
IMO all 5 (five) defence were soft in front of the net… no body contact till it’s too late…
Dobbie still got us a point…
I say start him against the Jets … but I’d be ok if they choose to go with Monty… I can see both sides of this goalie decision …
IMO – some defense struggles because they are only using 5 defence – they’re getting overworked and make mental mistakes… GO HABS GO
💙🤍❤️
I didn’t like losing another game where we were up in the third period. Maturity is the next thing to work on. (Makes sense with the youngest team in the league, I guess)
I also think Bettman better get a handle on the officiating ESPECIALLY “game management” because it won’t take long for bettors to lose their taste for betting on hockey if they don’t fix this.
Every national sports cast has ads plus for betting site and information and we get this reffing? I would think with all the money on these game the NHL would have good quality reffing.
It was much more than that . Find something else to talk about
I have the same comment as last time: all montreal needs is average goaltending. When montreal was slumping, we were getting 3-4 goals in 15 shots type of situation. Granted it’s a team sport and not just on the goalies but when Fowler came up, all he had to do was be average and it reinvigorated the team. Fowler actually gave an impressive performance and played beyond his current development level.
Dobes wasn’t great but he did enough to win the game. With a few more calls going the habs way and without that costly OT penalty, we had the W lined up.
As far as the Suzuki interference: Ek has his left leg outstretched so that could definitely be considered a kind of slew foot. However, he does seem to be looking at the puck either waiting for a pass or to push off and trail Kiprisov. It is possible that Suzuki came in with a lot of speed and being focused on the puck, the contact was incidental.
I think it’s 50/50, or maybe 60/40… I’m not rules expert though and it depends of the body language. It does seem like Ek’s reaction is a bit exaggerated.
I loved that "Refs suck" segment. It called my nerves a little bit. Have a good one!
bettman is ruining the show with the refs…remember when he was surprised when the Canadians got the first overall round pick.😂😂😂 2022 check it out it says it all …..in the words of bettman… o my o my ok montreal
I love Xhekaj … team needs a guy like him. Every team does. But we have got to find a way to have our 6D play more minutes. I swear he plays half the league average. That is not sustainable and needs to be sorted because it will hurt us big time in the long run.
Also coach, if Laine ain’t playing in Winnipeg I’ve heard he’s done in Montreal and I’m inclined to believe it. I know you disagree but I personally dont see where he fits in the lineup. If someone is willing to give us anything for him and retain his cap I think the Habs deal him. It’s all speculative but I just don’t see him playing in MTL again if he doesn’t play vs the pegs…he’s healthy…. Maybe he plays …Doesn’t seem like it.
I hate it when games are decided by reffing
Yup, bad call, with two refs either calling non-penalties or missing the obvious ones. The NHL needs to address this.
The Habs played a good game; too bad Dobes let in the soft first goal, but after that he made up for it.
Naw…I hear you, but must somewhat disagree – refs are to be seen same as a goal post or the paint of the red line or the weather, in my humble opinion.
(The Wild took a couple of uncalled high sticks, too. Seems to always even out pretty well.)
Habs must be leading this season's NHL stats in letting in the opponent's first shot of the game…very rarely brings happiness in the end.
Doby did not seem 100% awake in the 1st, but Eriksson-Ek sure did.
Dach still looks a bit…lost, at times.
Gally made me laugh – wow, was hoping for the hattie after that glorious and timely 1st period goal 😆
Demidov is worth his weight in gold, give him more mon€y or something… 👍
So are Slaf and Kappy, the line is enormous fun to watch, win or lose. 👍
Outrageous "hooking" call in OT.
Explain how in fuck you hook a guy with one hand. I'm pissed.
End result in large part is Dobes being sieve like on two goals. Matheson/Hutson 25+ minutes. Xhekaj 5:51. This is not sustainable. Arber plays less and less every game and for what reason(s) ? Why dress six D men ?
We'll take the point.
Ek was standing still at the blue line the Canadian player ran into him thats not a penalty
Goosestifson and kirill kippersoff are elite!!
