How the Sabres are finding success:
1) they are bigger and faster than every team they play
2) they are full of 200ft players that win puck battles, clog space, and turn the puck over with their relentless wave of forechecking and back checking – all ofc aided by being bigger and faster than everyone
3) they have one of if not the best or most skilled bluelines in the league
4) Lindy Ruff’s style of play and getting em to buy in. Lindy utilized the roster perfectly and is maximizing their talents. He allows the extremely skilled D corps to activate every rush and rotate down low and it causes nightmares for teams playing zone in their own end or covering rushes. And then because all the forwards are big and defensive menaces, they’re able to rotate to the backend and cover the blue line.
5) Selflessness and players buying in. Pretty sure Buffalo leads the league in blocked shots. And to the selflessness point, no forward is puck ragging or cheating for offense. Guys like Benson, McLeod, Doan, Ostlund etc could score more goals but they care more about playing winning hockey and going in and retrieving pucks and puck possession than cheating for rushes or chilling in the slot
6) Good goaltending. Lyon and UPL have been good. And Colton Ellis has given them solid games.
7) Great PK. Again, they are bigger and faster and clog the zone. And they eat pucks. Guys like Tuch and Malenstyn are menaces out there
The Stadium Series is also taking place during Gasparilla Weekend. Be prepared to see people dressed up as pirates. That's partly why they're leaning into it. Gaspy is a HUGE deal in Tampa.
