On April 2, 2025, during an NHL game between the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes, a significant altercation occurred between Capitals forward Connor McMichael and Hurricanes defenseman Jalen Chatfield. In the third period, amidst escalating tensions, Chatfield engaged McMichael in a fight, culminating in Chatfield lifting the helmetless McMichael and forcefully slamming him onto the ice. This incident contributed to a total of 142 penalty minutes in the game, with 122 minutes assessed during the third period alone.  
The takedown drew widespread criticism from fans and analysts, with many expressing concern over the potential for serious injury and calling for disciplinary action against Chatfield. Despite the outcry, the NHL Department of Player Safety reviewed the incident and decided not to impose any supplemental discipline on Chatfield. Reports indicate that the decision was based on the assessment that no specific rules were violated during the altercation.   
It’s important to note that physical confrontations, while not uncommon in hockey, carry inherent risks, especially when players are without protective gear such as helmets. The league continues to evaluate and address such incidents to maintain player safety.
