  1. PLEASE READ (also I apologize if this looks a bit long, but trust me it's worth reading as it will help expand and clear things up about SoCal as a whole):

As someone who is also lifetime resident of SoCal/Orange County, I feel like I need to clarify a couple of things about the distinct differences between the LA/OC/SD discussions that both Matthew and you guys brought up. Geographically speaking, Orange County is indeed a part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. That includes being part of the same TV media market. So that means for those of us who live in OC, all of our local news is also covered as part of LA's ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and CW (also referred to as KTLA for us locals) stations (all of which are the flagship stations for the West Coast for each of those networks), instead of separate. Same thing goes for LA's Univision and Telemundo (the two biggest Spanish sports and media outlets in the States) flagship stations for the Hispanic and Latino population, which is as you may know is massive in SoCal (I'm Mexican-American myself). San Diego on the other hand, being farther out from LA/OC, have their own dedicated coverage to their market from the networks above.

Moving on from that, LA and OC, despite being a part of the same geographic area, are also very divided in ways that a lot of people who aren't locals or at very least familiar with the two regions realize. For starters, politically speaking, LA leans more significantly liberal in comparison to OC, who leans more conservative. Part of that plays into the fact that we have a lot of richer, older conservative folks who live in some of the most expensive cities/communities in the whole state. Places like Newport Beach, Laguna Hills/Beach/Woods, Irvine (pronounce as UR-vine, as in vineyard, unlike how Jesse pronounced it lol), Coto de Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita, Dana Point, Anaheim Hills, Villa Park, etc, are FILLED with people with money. Like we are talking about people who live in insane mansions, hillside homes, gated communities, and own cars from premium brands such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, and McLaren. LA obviously has this as well in cities such as Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hills, etc., but it is not as widespread as it is in Orange County. Even culturally speaking, LA overall is seen as more vibrant and fast-paced to live in (especially if your under the age of 40) over Orange County, where it's seen as more laid back and calmly to live in.

Finally, in regards to sports fandom across all 3 of LA/OC/SD, when it comes to football, most people in LA/OC are either fans of the Raiders, 49ers, Cowboys, Rams, Steelers, Packers, and Chargers (I'm a Chargers fan myself). As you can see, not having an NFL team in either LA or OC has led to a generation of folks who cheer for teams from either NorCal or from out of state. SD on the other hand, are mixed with their feelings for their Chargers as there is still bad blood over the way they left the city. There is, however, still plenty of fans of them in SoCal, especially in Orange County (even the Chargers had their their practice facility in the OC city of Costa Mesa until late last year). USC, and to a certain extent, UCLA also saw themselves gaining plenty of fans for their football programs during the years we went without an NFL team. For basketball, the Lakers are the undisputed kings of all 3 regions. There is obviously Clippers fans, but they are mainly in pockets spread thinly across OC and SD (I'm a Lakers fan myself) and not so much in LA itself. Moving on to baseball, the Dodgers easily have the biggest fanbase amongst LA and OC (especially among the Hispanic/Latino population), while the Padres are BELOVED in San Diego (especially after the Chargers left town). As for the Angels, they have been generally well-supported in Orange County. However in recent years due to mismanagement from their owner and front office, the loss of Shohei Ohtani, and their 11 year playoff drought, they have taken a bit of a hit. Still, they are fairly popular and I've have seen and been friends with plenty of Angels fans (unlike Matthew apparently). I'm actually rebel when it comes to baseball here, as I'm actually a Yankees fan lol. Finally, in regards to the hockey fandom across SoCal, the Kings own LA entirely. I don't think I have ever met or heard of a Ducks fan from or living in LA. The Ducks on the other hand (of which I'm a fan of), due to the issues I mentioned with the Angels and our owners, Henry and Susan Samueli, fully embracing OC (unlike Arte Moreno from the Angels) as well as paying with their own money for both the big and hyped downtown Anaheim project, OCVibe, and the much needed renovations to the Honda Center, have seen a resurgence in popularity in the area despite how awful they've been on the ice. They also, due in part to the Gulls, have a stronger foothold in San Diego over the Kings. The Gulls are pretty well-supported down there and have routinely been amongst the best attended AHL teams since they arrived. That has helped translate to support of the Ducks over Kings in San Diego. The Ducks are even considered as SD's "local" team as part of their TV market, as Victory+, our streaming home to watch like 95% of Ducks games for free, is also available to access all over San Diego/SD County (along with all of LA, OC, and even Hawaii). Though only those of us in LA and OC can also watch Ducks games over-the-air via FOX's sister channel FOX 11 Plus.

Soccer is also pretty popular across all 3 regions (again also due in part of the massive Hispanic and Latino population), all 3 MLS teams in SoCal (LAFC, LA Galaxy, and the newest of 3, San Diego FC) all are very well supported and have excellent attendance overall. Here in Orange County, we have a team in the USL Championship (the second tier league behind the MLS in the US Soccer pyramid), Orange County SC, that have built a nice little fanbase for themselves as well. There is also a large amount for fans for teams from the Mexican League, Liga MX, across all 3 regions as well. Teams like Club America and C.D. Guadalajara (better known as the Chivas) have huge fan support in all 3 of LA, OC, and SD. Club Tijuana (better known as the Xolos) has some support down in San Diego due to the proximity between SD and Tijuana being close together by the US-Mexican border. Though some of that support has dwindled since the arrival of SDFC this season. Then obviously there are fans from teams in Europe such as the Big 6 from the Premier League, Real Madrid and Barcelona from La Liga, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund from the Bundesliga, Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan from Serie A, and PSG from Ligue 1.

As to Adam's question in regards to putting another team in San Diego, on top of the city just getting a new MLS team, there has been a new arena plan that has been proposed to be built in the city in an effort to lure either both or at least one of an NBA or NHL team. It's called the Midway Arena and it is being spearheaded by non-other than Stan Kroenke himself, as he is the majority investor in the development team behind this arena, Midway Rising. So again, there is at least someone who is interested in tapping into that market to try increase the sports market there via either the NBA or the NHL (or both according to them).

Again, thank you for taking the time to read this from a longtime fan of you guys! Keep up the tremendous work you guys put in to make this a great community!

  2. just came into the comments after listening to the podcast to talk about Winnipeg as someone from Winnipeg. I'm not coming in to say oh there is no problem the jets will never move they have one of the richest owners in the league thats played out and i dont think very important at all true north sports and entertainment are the real day to day owners of the team running it and the moose as a business. And i dont even think it is as big as Adam is going talking about Churchill and building infrastructure in this province which i dont disagree with, the province of manitoba is positioned really well as a hub for transportion in north america with the central location and access to the worlds oceans from hudsons bay. True north sports and entertainment have always thought about long term with the jets that people dont know so thought id say 🙂 TNSE own not just the Jets but also they own the moose and the canada life centre (the arena). they have and are continuing to invest in downtown winnipeg. they have bought up large pieces of real estate in the heart of the winnipeg downtown core starting with a block and developing it into multi use space calle true north square but after last year extending into on of the single largest plot of land in downtown winnipeg. purchasing portage place, just down the street from the arena they will be redeveloping this huge property in stages that started this yeah and is projected to be finished in 2028-29 part of this development includes a huge healthcare centre that will be on a 35 year lease to the province of manitoba. TNSE have made large investments into the real estate and development of downtown winnipeg so sure we are the smallest market in the NHL the owners of the team not only own the team but investing in the city and all that connects with their ownership of the team and the arena downtown. The Jets because of how small Winnipeg is will always be at the bottom of those lists probably always going to be bottom 1 but I think the jets future in winnipeg is not in doubt and they are not going anywhere. also cherry on top Jets were purchased 15 years ago for $170m even at one of the lowest valuations in the NHL that is a huge come up. Just wanted to talk about this stuff, really enjoy the pod and dont think you guys said anything wrong about the jets just like to add my input when i heard the convo!

  3. Hi does anyone know which podcast episode do they review their end of season predictions from the previous season? Have they done it yet for the 24-25 season or is that coming when the regular season starts?

I swear they did it for 23-24, where they guessed which team would end up where in the standings, but I forget when they normally do that. Any help is much appreciated

  4. Please watch the proper replay of the Stutzle penalty when Addison put his stick under Stutzle’s skate. He’s going 22 mph and then steps on a stick, of course he’s going to fly into the goalie.

  5. the absolute retardnationnnn of you guys still talking about Skinner like hes a NHL goalie is hilarious, hes the worst goalie in the NHL and its not ever close, Pickard is so much better then Skinner. the love affair with Skinner is just absurd.

  6. Sens fan here. Hard to disagree with anything you said about Cousins. I don't think he's going to end up in the regular lineup, but he has to go in against the Habs to take his lumps so the rest of the team doesn't have to take an asskicking for him.

  7. Steve's obsession with Vancouver being one of the valuable franchises was crazy. And going to Buffalo, BUFFALO, before LOS ANGELES, I just, sometimes i wonder about our guy Steve.

  8. "An active Mayor was on the Board of Director of Rogers Communication". Uhhhh yeah, John Tory was very close to Ted Rogers. I thought people knew that.

  9. Speaking of Rogers, did you guys hear about the concert fans who booked tickets for Rogers Stadium up in Downsview Park and went to Rogers Place downtown. Lol, they showed up at the Dome not realizing the concert is like 10km northwest.

  10. Lol honestly I love the econ lessons, yall are a v fun group to get a picture of another country's economic structure from a human pov. Keep on rocking 🙂

  11. Yes Steve, just like far left democrats and far right republitards are much more similar and far more alike then they realize.

Both absorbed with their owne rhetoric, convinced their side makes them the good guys, and incredibly intolerant, rude and hateful to anyone with a different opinion.

  12. I work for Molson, we had an end of summer party the other day and Geoff Molson was there. Spoke to him a bit and asked him about Demidov and he says he's tottaly fine, so good news.

  13. Bahahahh Adam said global warming……. like it's still a thing…. (I know it is in an overall context but he is using it in the political omg everyone must go green or florida will be underwater in 3 years rhetoric/misinformation instead of a natrually occurring geological event that is helped sped up by mankind)
