Penguins swing a BIG trade for Yegor Chinakhov on Monday!

The Penguins acquired young forward Yegor Chinakhov from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday! Hunter and Patrick break down the trade that saw the Penguins send two picks and forward Danton Heinen to Columbus in exchange for the 24-year-old forward (1:20). They also discuss if this was a bit of an overpayment for a struggling forward or if the cost is worth the risk. Then, the Penguins will welcome Metropolitan Division rival Carolina to PPG tonight for the first of their four matchups (12:10). They go over lineup notes, keys to victory, and more!

  1. Go Pens! Interesting trade! Hope it works out well for us! Also, I am someone within the LGBTQ Community so thanks for your support @PatrickDamp with the Pride Flag 🏳️‍🌈 in the background! We need all the Love and Support we can get with all the hatred and bigotry and discrimination from the far right/repugs/maga. Let’s Go Pens! Happy Early New Year’s Day to Everyone!

  2. I feel like it’s an overpay to be honest. Production aside I’m worried if he can stay healthy. Has only played more than 50 games twice in his 5 seasons in the nhl

  3. I am satisfied with the direction of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Although, this trade feels like buying something normal from the airport but still paying extra for it.

  4. Heinen might needed a sweetener to move off of. On top of in division require more to happen. We had to trade through the Lightning to get a Flyer during the 2017-18 cup run. Also this is really an even trade in my books.

  5. I have a conspiracy. What if Dubas is trying to set the market for when he trades mantha rakell and karlsson 👀

  6. If chinakhov plays like he wants to make a spot on the team next year that 3rd line could be deadly with that speed, hockey iq, and scoring potential.. especially since kindel and rut provide a LOT of those high danger scoring chances.

  7. Heads up for those watching before the game.. chinakhov wont be playing according to dubas

  8. Hunter, isn’t Chinakhov someone you really were hoping we could go get last year? Or am I crazy? Could’ve swore I heard his name more than once come up.

I am so glad we finally got rid of heinen. Not crazy about giving up the second, but a third is fine. Hopefully Chinakhov will get healthy and stay healthy, and play good for us. If so, this gets koivunen time in Wilkes to develop more. He needs it.

  9. IIRC, they were starting to get crowded in WB/S. If CBJ really wanted Heinen they would have claimed him off waivers. Maybe there's a slim chance Dubas paid a little extra for CBJ to take Heinen?

  10. Maybe a bit of an overpay but I think it's worth taking a flyer on this player. He's the kinda player Dubas has made clear he wants. They'll probably trade some vets so they can recoup those assets and then some.

  11. I agree it was an overpay, but also in division. I don’t like giving up the 2nd, but probably what it took.

  12. Hi Hunter & Patrick, I appreciate both your takes here, thank you! When it broke yesterday I was out visiting my father and went for dinner but thought "Can't wait to hear what the guys think!?"
So, we overpaid abit is the consensus I'm hearing…..well, we do not know that yet! We haven't seen him play here yet, haven't seen what type of opportunity he'll receive, or if he'll get 45 games and if/when afforded those games, ice-time, and opportunity with who he plays with yet!? So, depending on those factors is when we'll actually be able to say if we in fact did overpay or not. In this trade I think it's a wait and see if we did. I do believe unless his wheels completely fall off Dubas wouldn't of given that to not have the intention to retain him though. Also, part of the price could have been to take Heinen too…..

I hope I'm wrong here, but I find many players seem to need some time, say 5-10 games, after a trade just to start to feel comfortable with new linemates, a new system, and new coaches. I hope I'm wrong here, I really do! I'd love to see him also play with Malkin. Geno as a mentor could be invaluable to Yegor's taking another step in his finishing, hockey sense, and overall step up. Clearly, a shot like his and speed are absolute gifts so building up around those are key. Blessings guys, Victor 🙏

  13. Time will tell on the trade. Not all that excited about it, but willing to trust the current scouts who saw what they saw in Kindel and Horcoff saw something in Chinakhov.

My biggest “complaint” is not to use the draft capital to begin to address the derth of talent in the organization at defense and center. Middle 6 winger is one of the few areas they are actually in pretty good shape organizationally. That’s why this doesn’t make sense to me.

  14. Kid line was lacking a trigger man. Chinakhov is that, period. I think this is going to work.

  15. Hey Hunter I just want to say that players do know the returns that they were traded for and some will work towards it,, I'm hoping this guy does just that I'm feeling optimistic and how may I DM? Love your show

  16. Do any of you pay attention to the roster? The Pens had 50 contracts on the books. To acquire a player they had to move a player. The Pens had to pay the Bluejackets to take Heinen. They got a talented young player with some experience for a vet they didn’t want anymore and a couple of picks that are long shots to even play in the NHL by the averages.

  17. Only time will tell if this was an overpay or not but giving up the second rounder for him kind of makes it seem like it is. Chinakhov hasn't proved anything at this level yet, although the potential is there.

  18. I like the speed and goals in Chinakhov's highlight videos. I would have traded the Oilers 2029 2nd for him.
    Brazeau-Geno-Chinakhov (or Mantha)

  19. My thought on the trade, and the third round pick, in particular, is that the third may have been to get Columbus to take Heinen. I'm thinking that Dubas knows that he has way to many players in the organization that are too good for the AHL, but not good enough to win a spot in the 'Burgh.

  20. If he can stay healthy, and the development team can help keep his back strong, according to NHL Edge, Chinakov's got a lot of upside.

  21. It really comes down to the bust rate of a high second round pick vs Chinakov’s bust potential. I’d have felt a lot better if it were our lowest of the 3 2nds.

  22. Also, Chinakhov has been showing a ton effort back checking and just effort in general. Now, that may be temporary with him getting here, but worth noting.
