The Winnipeg Jets Have Reached This Point

After nine (now ten) straight losses, sitting dead last in the NHL, and a midseason press conference that left fans wanting more, the Winnipeg Jets have arrived at a moment that can’t be ignored.

On Winnipeg Sports Talk, Andrew “Hustler” Paterson delivers a candid, level-headed breakdown of where the Jets actually are right now,how they got here, what the press conference really told us, and why the rest of this season is about reality, not denial.

This isn’t panic.
This is perspective.

What do you think the Jets should do next?

  1. It’s very simple…still no 2C & RD1, weak 3rd pairing D, below avg backup, vets who have been introduced to father time with zero prospects banging on the door and little to no valued assets to help speed up a re-tool.

  2. I see the older guys not getting better this year – or next year. Only slower and less productive. Start the shuffle now – get the young guns some experience. They are quicker and will be more tenacious on the forecheck. That’s what the Jets need. Bring up Salommonson and Bauer. Chiby and Ford and Yeager. Be active at the trade deadline.

  3. with coach and management they have now sure do feel sorry for any draft pick joining the club

  4. This season had featured pressure, among Canadian NHL teams, on the:
    – Canucks, Sens and Habs to make some noise in the postseason although among those teams, I see only the last two as still having a realistic shot of qualifying for said postseason
    – Oilers, Jets and Leafs to go on deep playoff runs although at this point, of those three teams, I see the Oilers and Leafs still having realistic shots of qualifying for this postseason (the Oilers, in a top-3 divisional spot, in the strongest position of the three teams I mentioned earlier in this bullet point)

The Calgary Flames, having not qualified for postseason play since 2022, and having two seasons ago tanked, surprisingly came close last season to qualifying for postseason play. Although the outcome of their current season remains still very much TBD, players on the Flames still have something to play for.

  5. It's not the same team. Ehlers was a key part of this team. I meanwhile know that his creativity was the second line. His speed and intelligent play made Vladi and Perfetti valuable players who gained 38 and 50 points respectively. It is shocking to see what these guys achieve without him. And a very dangerous weapon of the Jets was the PP. No one is able to substitute Ehlers in that role – I desperately miss his play-making abilities. The biggest mistake was, that no one in the organization realized how good he was. He even got less ice-time than Appleton. It was a huge mistake to let him go. The team now pays the price. Chevy should try to bring Mangiapane to Winnipeg, maybe this will give them a boost.

  6. The answer is simple… get rid of the Porn Staches. When you look like a dick you play like a dick. Also it’s clear that with everyone getting nice big fat contracts there is no incentive anymore.

  7. Buffalo changed GM and they won 10 in a row. Winnipeg's sportscasters are afraid of criticizing Chevy for fear of Chipman relocating the Jets.

  8. Playing the Moose youngsters so as to tank for No. 1 won't sit with Jets's season ticket holders

  9. Your in last place. You say the players have no trade value and your prospects don't look great. What do you think the future holds?

  10. Here’s how I see it as an arm chair GM.
    1. Look to see what, if anything is available on the trade market to HELP the team but needs to be long term.
    2. Move depth players at the deadline to restock lower draft picks.
    3. Once that occurs, call up the players identified at the Moose and see where we are at the draft once the season ends.
    4. MOVE A CORE PCS. Due to contract amount and term I would identify 44. Many teams can fit his salary. When do teams overpay? AT the trade deadline when teams have cup aspirations. Do I want to, hell NO, but to get high end players to fill in that speed and scoring touch and compliment a high end draft pick one of the core players are the only assets we have for a re-tool before this core is to old to compete.

  11. I already knew before the season and the mediocre players they obtained are all bottom guys that are NOT difference makers and NOT make them a playoff contender. Sorry but it’s true. Chevy has already been at helm too LONG. Other teams have moved on from GMs if there’s no results to show. Chipman needs to make a call here. The DRAFT and DEVELOPMENT hasn’t worked out. Even their top prospects aren’t even given a fair chance. Loyalty is their Achilles' heel

  12. If I were in the skates of a Jets prospect I'd probably feel incredibly demoralized.
Extremely poor AHL/Development support from the Org, being lied to on repeat, hearing all the media(management/ownership brown-nosers) talking about how they aren't good enough almost on a daily, dealing with extremely toxic veterans like Blake Wheeler…having perfectly fine showings in the NHL but being sent down in favor of veterans like Nyquist(31GP – 8PTS), Pearson(35GP – 6PTS), Toews(41GP – 13PTS), Namestnikov(41GP – 8PTS), Koepke(26GP – 6PTS), Iafallo(41GP – 14PTS), Schenn(28GP – 5PTS), Pionk(37GP – 7PTS) and the LOWEST salary hit of just these players mentioned is $1mil/yr.
I feel for prospects drafted by the Jets because I don't think it matters how good they actually are; ownership and management have completely lost touch with how to be successful in Winnipeg.
