After steamrolling Paul Coffey, Kirk Maltby says Scotty Bowman took notice — and not long after, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. A wild piece of old-school NHL lore that shows how fast careers could turn in the 90s.

He grew up around the corner from me. Our families knew each other, as he is the same age as my older brother, and they both played on the same hockey team before Kirk left for the OHL. He would bring the Stanley Cup to town when he won, and go to the local pub with it. Everyone would go down to sit and take photos with him and the cup.
That's totally hockey right there. Wasn't often we ended up at the same bar with the team we just played but that's the way to handle it.
Complete Hogwash!
Coffey own-goaled and Scotty traded him. That was the icing on the cake.
#18 comes with some weight. Copp? Yeah Andrew I don’t know if you carry that weight homie. Check me out when you gotta couple Cups doggie.
He coaches his kids hockey team around here. I've reffed him a few times. He's super chill but his team goons it up.
Coffey was no Selkie winner himself. Did a lot of dirty stuff throughout his career, and some would say he had it coming for awhile? It was a clean hit by Maltby anyways
"Thank god Probey was already in Chicago" – looooool
Paul coffee legend !!!
Maltby was nail gun and Coffey boy was he soft , Great skater but what a soft player Bowman traded him for Shanny what a deal to solidify back to back cups
This is hockey. Ready to kill each other for 60 minutes and shake hands when it is over. Repeat.
I sold him furniture in Novi Michigan in 96. He was moving into some luxury apartments on Novi rd
Gotta love these hockey stories. The camaraderie between hockey players after the game is fantastic.
Maltby was a Shit Disturber (SD) who would never back it up. Good player, but as a Wings' fan I didn't care for his style.
You should credit the podcasts that actually did the interview. All good just sayin
He didn't wear a visor playing in Edmonton, then he started wearing one of the biggest ones in the league while with Detroit. I mean it was huge. What made him switch?
maltby was such a weasel. wearing that scuba tank across his face and playing the way he did such a rat
Love Kirk Maltby
IIRC Red Wings traded D Dan McGillis for Maltby.
Funny thing is that Coffey used to defend himself in the 1980s.
