Happy to see Matthews healthy and playing the game like we all know he can…I’ve always defended Reilly but a -4 tonight and a bad decision in OT, they really need to work with him on his defensive game, I don’t think he’s waiving his NM

Not "We didn't close it out" or "we didn't exectute", Morgan….."you" didn't do that. Not even close. Didn't even try to execute. -4 sometimes happens, but this was a -4 by quitting in the defensive end and not spending any portion of an entire career to learn how to close gaps or learn how to play the man. In fact dives out of the way out of fear whenever there's anyone coming his way. He is by far the worst defenceman they have in their own zone and doesn't seem to understand it's his responsibility to improve. Sit him in the next game. Send the message that for years this has been unacceptable. Doesn't deserve the "A" as at least 4 defencemen are ahead of him as far as "leadership" goes. We all know he's a nice guy. We've all wanted to see him succeed. But he just doesn't show any of the work ethic or accountability to be a leader. It shows on the ice how badly he's schooled routinely. He more than anyone on this team is holding them back from success as his toxic fear of all other players unfortunately bleeds to the other players. He shouldn't see another second of 3rd period time if they're up. Probably should be sat out a few games so he can see how all the far better D men play routinely so he can work his way back into being a responsible hockey player again.Not only has he never worked on learning the defensive end of the game in taking the man or closing gaps, he's never developed a slap shot, practiced his aim on wrist shots, or even tried to look confident in any zone on the ice. Always skittish and doesn't commit to anything at all. Just terrified to be a hockey player. Certainly if Carlo and Tanev are healty, Rielly should be nowhere near being on the ice. He's not close to their skill level or their confidence level. Sad as that is, he's just pushed himself into piles of excuses that others aren't executing or not taking ownership of his galactic-ally horriffc defensive blunders. Like, it's ok, bud….just own up to it and be an adult about it. Stop vacationing and take it seriously. Really wish the best for this guy, but he's chosen this path of fear and won't put in the time to learn the game with any confidence. Thus, he is by far their worst defenceman in all zones. Right now he has no confidence and there is no such thing as getting him a better partner to cover for him. His mistakes are far too catastrophic on his own. Needs to grow up and take this team and this game far, far more seriously like the guy who openly schooled him a pile of times tonight embarrassing the veteran countless times.

Shame about the loss, a moment like this for Matthews should be celebrated. I've passed judgement towards him since Four Nations, but these past couple of games? He's looking a lot like himself, which is what this team needs. Hopefully this continues. As for the rest of the boys? Some of them have got to find a way, and if they can't? Time to let them go. This is about results, not feelings.

Matthews = Clown show that only cares about personal records. He will do just enough for the idiotic leafs ownership and management to give him another big contract. After that his production will drop even lower than it is now. Enjoy NEVER winning a cup with Matthews. Leafs management is still working to build a team around Matthews.
