The NHL’s Worst Ever Implosion? | FFAF #75

The Jets have put together their best stretch of six consecutive periods in months.

And yet, it still ended with two more points evaporating behind Edmonton goaltender Calvin Pickard.

So where does Winnipeg go from here?

It’s becoming harder not to believe the Jets have let too many points slip through their fingers — and may now be too far back to realistically catch up.

How long can Scott Arniel continue to lean on the top line for 25-plus minutes a night? Just how long have the goal droughts stretched for Cole Perfetti, Jonathan Toews, Gustav Nyquist, Nino Niederreiter, and Vladislav Namestnikov? And wasn’t the depth of this roster supposed to be its strength?

What kind of streak would the Jets need to go on to get back into the playoff picture? And from an organizational standpoint, is chasing the postseason even the right move at this point?

Cam and Jim dive into all of it on another episode of Jets @ Noon.

  1. Maybe I’m dumb but are u sure last place is top 3? Cant 3 teams win the lottery to move up, so could technically draft 4th no?

  2. Burbe pulled Woll .. and he turned the game around. The coach needs to be able to make changes mid-game. Arniel take note.
I want the great draft pick now.

  3. Jets and Leafs have traded draft picks for rentals for the last few years. I would argue that leafs have traded more picks and included prospects where I believe Jets don't trade prospects. Having said that it seems leafs have done better with their prospects last few years

Minten, Cowan, Robertson, Hildeby, Knies and McMann are all playing in the nhl

winnipeg has Samberg and Pefetti and Perfetti is looking suspect.

Not good the last few years.

  4. I haven’t even watched yet but I know Toth is about to say some more dumb shit. Can’t wait for him to say how Chevy shouldn’t be held accountable for this disastrous roster construction

  5. Can't blame Chevy who I believe is feverishly working the phones.
Pretty tough for him to convince players to accept a trade here as the Jets are on many players no trade lists.

  6. Morgan Barron wasn’t developed by the Jets he was developed by the NYR. He came in and played with moose in playoffs and was the best player out there as was Chisholm.

  7. Only a complete scholar would say “the jets have played fantastic hockey” while being on an 8 game losing streak. Nobody takes Toth seriously right?

  8. Jets draft team needs to be replaced. Nothing past 10 years. We have Samberg that’s it. The rest are duds. And Samberg isn’t great as of now.

  9. TRYING TO GET MANGIOPANZI FROM THE OILERS WOULD BE THE STUPIDEST THING THE JETS DO. WE HAVE PLENTY OF GO NO WHERE FORWARDS! YOU GUYS ARE A JOKE. DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOCKEY?

  10. My gosh, these callers! Please do poo poo them lol. Some say something good and then all nonsense. I watched some Moose games and Walker Duehr was all over the place, winning puck battles and very aggresive to the net; big fast dude with hands and game smarts. Isaak Phillips has good numbers and is fun to watch but I think the D got the numbers, although a cpl should stay in the press box for a bit.

  11. Toth: arniel is great look at last season. Toth: the jets are a good team look at last season.
If he was good he would have figured it out this season, if THEY were good there stats would back it with facts! Stop trying to prove points with previous seasons. THIS TEAM CURRENTLY SUCKS plain and simple

  12. No competition. No fear. Put the boys in waivers. No one take any of them. There is no fear. The not playing better. Bring in the young guys. So you create competition. Send Miller down. Bring Elias. Let's go.

  13. Lambert is ready but the stupid jets don't get it? Lambert is giving the jets the finger he's to good for the Moose he's tired of marinating? The Moose is a Salt mine of Hockey!

  14. Arniel should have been fired 12 games ago when this team was trending down. Not all his fault, but what else can you do?

    Chevy, do something!

  15. Every time I hear somebody say Chevy is doing a good job considering he’s GM of Winnipeg, I feel like I’m in a CIA level psy op except this one is promoted by Jets management. What a brilliant strategy to lower expectations. How do we know that no other GM could do better? We don’t. We have no one to compare Chevy to because he’s been the only GM the Jets have had since returning to the NHL. Four playoff wins in 15 years. Jets fans are supposed to be satisfied with that. Time to try somebody different.

  16. Why not cut Shen, pearson, Nyquiist and maybe more? Then they can play some of their younger propects, and get a world class pick. What do they have to lose, they are not making the playoffs anyway? Also, why not cut Comrie and tade for Brossoit? Those might be drastic moves but at least it's doing something.

  17. The simplest way forward is fix the lethargic bottom 6
you have Lowry, Iafallo, Barron and Perfetti. What you need is energy, speed and youth that can help these guys get going
Keep Toews and bring up guys embrace the old GST mindset, Is there a skill guy like Matthew Phillips (San Diego Gulls, 25 points) albeit smaller but fast, skilled 27 years old. That could be brought in to help the offence or an Older AHL vet with size hands and speed like Logan Shaw. inexpensive and worth a look
or even using Baron or Iaffallo and splitting up the top line and filling lines 1 and 2 with a skilled prospects

  18. Chevy and his brain trust are clueless. He hires a clown who got fired in Columbus as his head coach for imploding the jackets and losing the room. He’s done the same here. Chevy brings in old men to replace the plugs he got rid of and he lets Ehlers walk for FREE. Mismanagement by definition and performance. No wonder PoMo walked. Buff did F you to the Jets and chose to retire. Wheeler gets called a cancer but what about Scheifele. No one wants to say it but maybe he’s the problem. The entire league seems to know it but not True North and not Jets fans. This team is doomed. Bet against them and enjoy every loss.

  19. Holy shit! That's the first time I've ever seen Jim on camera haha 1290! on the radio! Super cool, Miss that show!Subscribed!

  20. The Jets, claimed Coach Arniel, had done a lot of good things before that game vs the Leafs had turned into “a pond hockey“ one. In just 0:13 to open the relevant Jets @ Noon radio show, anyone can tell that that game didn’t go that well for the Jets. That loss was narrow, but at the end, it’s still a loss.

I don’t remember the second iteration of the Jets‘ having played this badly in any season during which I have watched that team. From the Northern Hemisphere spring of 2021, I’ve used a TV subscription add-on (NHL Centre Ice) that has ever since allowed me to watch regular-season (and some preseason) games played by Canadian NHL teams even if such TV broadcasts, with my TV subscription based in the region of the Leafs, otherwise blacked out.

The 2021–22 season of the Habs had featured the Habs, in regular season play, sink to a record of 6–15–2–0 on wins and regulation, OT and shootout losses before the GM tenure of Marc Bergevin, who had been appointed to that role in May 2012, lose that job. Jeff Gorton, a one-time NYR executive, was, on the same November 2021 day as Bergevin had been fired, was appointed Exec VP of Hockey Ops. The following January, the Habs would appoint Kent Hughes, hoping to find a candidate with the right skill, but also bilingual in English in French, as GM.

I don’t think of Southern Manitoba, unlike Southeastern Ontario or Southwestern Quebec, as having remotely close to even have the local population being bilingual in English and French. That said, Jets’ GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, having been appointed to his job in 2011, remains the only existing GM of a Canadian NHL team whose appointment occurred before the 2019–20 season, with Ken Holland having ended, in June 2024, his tenure as GM of the Oilers (a tenure that for Holland had begun in 2019).

As much as I don’t think Holland was fired as much as he had retired, he does have to his name what, following the 2011 Stanley Cup final appearance of the Canucks, no existing Canadian NHL GM, bar Stan Bowman, whether of a Canadian NHL team or any other, already does: as an executive, having overseen an appearance in a Stanley Cup final (with Mr. Bowman having overseen multiple Stanley Cups in a similar roll with the Blackhawks and as a finalist with the Oilers). So why is Chevy, as Cheveldayoff is also known as, still GM of the Jets? The Jets have made only one appearance in a conference final during his entire career in that role, and that was back in 2018. since then, the Jets have won just two playoff series: in 2021, via a sweep of the Oilers; and last May, in a game-7 OT thriller, in a conference quarterfinal against the Blues. In the latter playoff series of the 2020s ones in question, the Jets didn’t win an away game, making it crucial for them to win every home game. Just imagine if they had lost even ONE home game.

Last postseason, the Leafs and Oilers won enough away games, in their respective conference quarterfinals, to win those series, with the Oilers’ having won 4 straight games after having fallen behind, at Crypto Arena (the former Staples Center) to the LA Kings, 2-0.

The Habs, after having started their rebuild late in November 2021, qualified last season for their first playoff appearance since having qualified for the 2021 Stanley Cup final and so far this season look like they’ll do even better on positioning within their own division, with, according to my last check of NHL standings, third place in the Atlantic Division. While among the remaining Canadian teams, I see the Oilers also as strong candidates to qualify for this coming postseason, and quite possibly see one or more of the Flames, Leafs and Sens follow suit, I see this season for the Jets as a write-off.

  21. Toth why is it so hard for you to understand. They aren’t good because they can’t do it for a whole game.

  22. Worst collapse in a calendar year!! Toth: this is a good team! Totally laughable take. Arniel has no idea how to work with this group. It’s not about playing consistently this group simply doesn’t have it. Absolutely terrible work done by this management group. Giving away draft picks for schenn and not adequately equipping this team in the offseason. No other market would Chevy survive this mess he created. Draft and development motto is totally broken. Has had years and years to address the needs that plagues this team

  23. I’m honestly tired of people constantly picking on Cole Perfetti. He’s never been given a real, consistent chance to play with skilled linemates. The time with Ehlers was offensively unstructured, and then it was Namestnikov—hardly ideal for developing a young skill player.

Funny thing is, in my circles nobody has an issue calling out #7 for what he is: not a second-line center, not even a consistent player. Eight goals in 70 regular-season games? And if you strip out the usual soft October defensive play around the league take off five. Then it’s three goals in 70 games from a guy who’s slotted on the second line most nights? Come on.

Move Perfetti to center—that’s why we drafted him. Put #14 on one wing and #9 on the other and let him actually play his position.

    And Comrie? Bye bye.

  24. This years team has one thing left to do…win the draft lottery!! I'm not saying don't support the team but realize the only thing that makes this year a success is getting the first or second pick in the draft!!

  25. If it is even possible, Nametsnikov, Pearson, Perfetti, Iafallo and Nyquist should take a break and Gustafsson, Duehr, Shaw, Lambert and Dolan should be inserted for if only energy but they will bring more than the guys we have now.

Lambert has more goals than Nyquist and more over the last 25 games than Vlady. He also has a better goal per game than most of the Jets.
