RED WINGS MIDSEASON REVIEW & EDVINSSON’S HEART – Winged Wheel Podcast – Jan. 1st, 2026

WWP NIGHT w/ the GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS TICKETS (with Limited Edition Signed Puck): https://griffinshockey.com/wwp

The Detroit Red Wings finished 2025 with a bang, tallying another win and putting the Winged Wheel Podcast in near-unprecedented territory halfway through the season.

Tune in as we open by discussing Detroit’s win over Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs, including Simon Edvinsson’s unbelievable blocked shots and overtime winner (with an electric LCA crowd and goal call by Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond), his Herb Brooks “Miracle” quote about the bruise on his leg being a long way from the heart, Cam Talbot getting the win and throwing hands, & more. Next, Todd McLellan’s squad’s New Year’s Eve win over Hellebuyck & the Winnipeg Jets, including Mason Appleton’s game winner, Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider factoring in, and another win for John Gibson. We then discuss the best December since 2007 for Steve Yzerman’s Detroit Red Wings, their upcoming schedule, the insanely competitive Atlantic Division (Buffalo Sabres winning 10 straight, Tampa Bay Lightning back to form), John Leonard going back down to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins as Patrick Kane returns, & more.

Next, our midseason Detroit Red Wings review and look ahead to 2026, including the good and the bad from Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Emmitt Finnie, Andrew Copp’s resurgence next to Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat, Marco Kasper’s need to get going, Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson putting up league-best numbers, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Nate Danielson, and Emmitt Finnie’s performances, improved goaltending from Gibson & Talbot, whether playoffs are the expectation for Todd McLellan’s group at this point, and trade targets for Steve Yzerman to seek out to bolster the team.

We then discuss Team USA and Team Canada’s Olympic rosters, including snubs like Robertson, DeBrincat, Kane, Fox, Bennett, Bedard, Scheifele, Schaefer, & others, how the teams will fare with their selected players, & more, as well as a look at how Eddie Genborg, Max Plante, Carter Bear, and the rest of the Detroit Red Wings prospects are doing at the World Juniors.

All of that & lots more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment – enjoy!

  1. Edvinsson getting a spot for Sweden? Razor should be in, Seider definitely playing for Germany

Is no El Gato for Team USA a snub?

  2. As a dad of three staying up till 10 is an accomplishment lol I tend to keep up with the wings the next morning when getting the kids around. How brad does all he days with kids makes him a legend.

  3. Nhl scheduling is trash, we played yesterday then travel to play pitts today, then saturday, we play pitts at home…….

  4. 2026 reminder that this is the ONLY wings podcast cuz F the grind line guys 😂😂

  5. Additional Info, Detroit’s 2025 2nd round pick Edie Genborg (RW) just scored two goals to allow Sweden to beat the USA and has 5 point points in four games for Team Sweden. Max Plante (LW-2024-2nd) remains the NCAA’s leading scorer with 16 goals and 14 assists. Goalie Trey Augustine (2023-2nd ) continues to be a wall in the NCAA with a 31-11-4 record 0.930 save percentage and 6 shutouts. Shai Buium (LD-2021 2nd) and Anton Johansson (RD-2022-4th) continue to look good in Grand Rapids. The future is bright.

  6. If someone would have said in September the Red Wings would be 6 wins shy of league best Colorado by January 1st people would have laughed.

  7. I don’t get the Faber love. He’s the 3rd or 4th best defenseman on the Wild. Who gives a rip about Four Nations, that was a year ago. It’s a what have you done for me lately world. But he will get on because his NHL GM is the GM of the Olympic team. By the way, to me Rasmussen is playing like he did before the broken kneecap. That year, I’m thought he was one of the better forwards on the Winga.

  8. We should absolutely be looking for a reliable bottom-4 defenseman on an expiring contract. Someone who can shore up our 3rd pairing will be a big difference maker overall, whether you bench JBD or AlJo to do it. The cost will be high, but we should be able to move a middling prospect and a pick to get it done.
Stevie may miss, but he HAS to take the swing.

  9. I know it was not real but to even discuss anything ruzzian on a jersey is a crime. Until that country learns to behave itself, it should remain a pariah. I love Red Wings but I hope Buchelnikov does not get a visa. And, btw, I’m Ukrainian, and my civilian friends have been killed by ruzzia.

  10. It does sting a bit losing Berggren for nothing after seeing what Pittsburgh paid for Chinakov.
Can't expect any gm to manage assets flawlessly…but an extra 2nd and 3rd definitely helps at the deadline.

  11. hard disagree on the first line. rotate soderblom and especially kasper up there. finnie has been great, but his chemistry with danielson is extremely natural. let danny center for finnie and apple. if we want these guys to be our future, we need to put them in positions where they can GROW. literally look at kasper when he’s between cat/kane and when he’s next to that bum compher. you at least have to try it…
