The Penguins will take on the Atlantic Division-leading Detroit Red Wings in the first game of a home-and-home series. Hunter and Patrick begin the New Year’s Day episode of Locked On Penguins taking a look at the first opponent on the schedule for the Penguins: the Detroit Red Wings (1:40). Detroit has overcome a miserable start to the season and has climbed all the way to the top of the Atlantic and their core players have been a big piece of that ascent. Then, they break down a few line changes (12:30) as well as talk about expectations for newcomer Yegor Chinakhov, who is expected to make his debut. Finally, they give some quick thoughts on the Philip Tomasino trade (21:41) as well as their expectations for the Penguins 2026.

I started the season feeling like we're freerolling. If we suck and get a pick?… cool! If we compete? Great!
Then they started all hot so I had visions of at least being a spoiler in the playoffs.
Recently I've been looking at 2026 prospects so Im back to being ok if we lose.
I just hope we avoid that 12th pick or worse if we miss the playoffs.
Also you guys should do a segment on the world juniors and how the Brunicke and Horcoff have looked in them?
Yes, do the move up in the draft thing for a young player that is ready now. Not a free agent.
I tried typing this twice and it wont post. 😠
I was watching the Lemieux return fron retirement game last night (what a great time to be alive and a Pens fan)
But it got me to thinking, who are some of your favorite (really good but not hall of fame) penguins of the past?
I'm going Kovalev right away without hesitation. So fun to watch him with the puck and when he'd get it on the point on the power play? You knew that top right corner RIFLE was coming!
Next for me is Johan Hedberg. He was so small and flashy and fun to watch. He went into god mode for us for awhile and into the playoffs.
On D? Shootouts to Rob Scuderi, Brian Dumoulin and Darius Kaspuritis! I've always loved the blue collared, reliable, thankless defenseman. 🤷♂️
Plus the teams skinner had to play against 17:24
I don't think you guys have credited Skinner's play against Carolina, he was very steady and made a couple big saves early before the Pens grabbed the lead. The team was great in front of him but he was great when he had to be in that one
Def Leppard's first 3 albums are like Mario, Jagr, and Sid.
What fucking time does the game start!
Seeing Josh Yohe hint that Kyle Dubas may go after Jason Robertson, because he's an RFA and Dallas is cap strapped, would it be worthwhile to trade for him, now? Would Dallas go for a package like Novak, Koivunen and a pick? Or do you just wait and offer sheet him?
I am satisfied with the direction of the Pittsburgh Penguins
