its amazing that every team in the entire league is, at least by records, in playoff contention. A good 10 game run would put even the last place teams into a playoff spot.
hey Shannon, instead of doing standings by points (which is often misleading) can you do it by game above NHL .500. Its simpler and more accurate. For example, Seattle is -2. They have 12 W's and 14 L's (in regulation). And they're behind two teams that are -3 in the usual version of NHL standings. The reason Seattle is behind is because they've played fewer games. They actually have a better record.
fwiw, using the wins minus regulation losses for the NHL is effectively the same way teams in NFL, MLB and NBA do their standings.

Danualt trade is low key fucking brilliant. I've seen some people trying to drag him for the whole no goals thing. Listen to me when I tell you, that is NOT why Danualt is in a lineup. Danualt is in a lineup to make opposing teams top centers and forward lines pull their damn hair out by the roots and though he is no Barkov or Bergeron, he is damn good at that job. All for a 2nd round pick? Nah the habs cooked with that trade, huge W for them.

Vancouver and Buffalo giving everyone false hope. They are twins..THG was correct. Also I want ot say thank you again to Shannon for his early Christmas present to FL Panthers fans. The video of whats wrong with FL really helped. They must have showed it during a practice session prior to their next game. Only team to beat them since is Colorado and no motivation speech is going to help beat them. I want to say the turning point of the game for FL/Carolina is when Marchand gets his "tripping" call because the canes cant stay on their skates. No stick near the feet, legs, mid section, just a diving cane. That made them play angry. Carolina shrunk and got scared. Coughed up the puck a bunch. Got even more scared and just stopped trying to win and went full blown please dont lose please dont lose. Same thing St Louis did the other night. 1 point was good enough.

Jets vs Avs felt like a playoff game at moments. I think Winnipeg is capable of playing better but doing the let's just make the playoffs shuffle. Colorado is overachieving in the reg season but I've seen that amount to jack squat so many times. Good enough to get in is all that matters before they wipe the slate clean.
This is the problem you introduce when half your league makes the playoffs – regular season games become increasingly meaningless. Im a fan of LESS teams making the playoffs, which would make the games we are watching now more meaningful. I'm not even an Avs fan but i find it pretty terrible that all theyre "achieving" right now mostly amounts to zero actual advantage come the playoffs. It means that being supremely good isnt even incentivized in the slightest – just being kinda-sorta good is the best.

As a Jets fan, I've come to the conclusion that the Jets have gone into playoff form, way, way, way too early in the season. I am hopeful that they manage to get back into regular season form and it carries them into the playoffs and they go all the way!!!
