Patrick Johnston: Was there a problem between Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes’?

Postmedia’s Patrick Johnston joins the boys to elaborate on his weekend reporting of the relationship between Hughes and EP40 and how that may have shaped the Canucks’ future. They get into the win streak and how that could alter the Canucks sell-off plans. PJ also talks about the Abby Canucks and their missing Cup rings, and the owners may not need a new investor after all?!

  1. players with too much ego have always been problematic. considerring the cap hit, i don't know how that will happen, but will need to figure out a creative way to get rid of pettersson somehow someday

  2. PJ picking his words carefully? Personally I think EP40’s performance vs contract is the biggest elephant in the room and very likely a factor in the departure of all of Miller, Tocchet and Hughes.

  3. Most of the fanbase is over their disappointment after the trade and have come to appreciate the positives that came out of it. Now this? You want to blame Pettersson for Hughes being a Benedict Arnold? What a crock.

  4. Those last few points are why I hate this fuckin organization while still cheering for my team. It’s the greedy, corporate, wring every ounce out of the employee type philosophy that makes me despise this owner. Not only in hockey but in business as well.

  5. Patrick Alvine asked Adam Foote several times over tbe last couple seasons if he would ever want to be a head coach. He also told him he should. I think the statement of hiring him only to convince Quinn to stay is Biased.

  6. Also, I haven't heard attention brought to the fact Quinn gave his news on US Thanksgiving. Im betting he decided, and may of even pre-told management, that if the team wasn't in the playoff race by Thanksgiving, he wouldn't be re-signing.

  7. To all saying Hughes quit on this team … He gave 100% to an organization as poorly as run as the Canucks.

He didn't quit on this team, the team failed him

  8. look at these bozos still beating the dead horse that is quit hughes. move on already, it's old fucking news

  9. Everyone should be ready to put most of the blame of this core’s failure on EP40’s shoulders. The one chance they had (23-24), he completely choked. If he scores more than 1 goal in the playoffs they likely go on to the conference finals, then who knows? Instead he missed empty nets, got out bodied, and overall did not look like he was in the fight. Then there’s the feud, which I don’t need to get into.

As others have said, this team cannot fully move on and build a new identity until this guy goes. I don’t care if they only get a 7th round pick, there are many intangible reasons for this team to get him out asap.

You don’t want a guy with ā€œpractice habitā€ issues mentoring your prospects.

  10. I’m not a fan of #40 but he’s not asked to leave . Quinn quit on the boys , he was in the ice while his defence sat in the bench most of the game. If you don’t want to be on the squad gtfo ! Chow

  11. Quinn Hughs was leaving no matter what.
    Petey chose to stay.
Quinn was the worst captain in the history of the team.
Miller came to town and walked all over him.
I don’t think Hughs could face the Swedish players in the eye.
If I had a loudmouth American at work I’d probably say something too.

  12. Bad for the Canucks the their star centre would be a third line centre on most teams. Next to go is the GM. Hughes should never have been the captain. In the end the Canucks have EP 40 for years thanks to management.

  13. Yep this story as their winning 4 in a row is the epitome of Vancouver sports media who care very little about actual winning hockey rather the drama and nonsense story lines they can spin up.

  14. If true it illustrates what a lousy captain Hughes was. If there are interpersonal issues it's the captain's job to build unity and fix it. Not get dragged into it.

  15. Sekeres and Johnston are total cancers.

Demko was also not at the dinner. Why aren't we talking about it? Like jesus christ .. a 27 year old man that just got married and just suffered a miscarriage with his wife.. didn't have a short notice dinner with one of his bachelor bros… OH NO. And somehow he is the problem as well.. rather than maybe.. THE CAPTAIN THAT QUIT ON THE TEAM AFTER ONE BAD SEASON LOL .

Petey and Demko .. two stars that ASKED TO STAY… weren't at the dinner for the quitter that bolted.. oh no.

  16. In hindsight, turns out Quinn was too selfish to be a captain. Too many Americans and Swedes on this team. Need more Canadians with grit and can still play the game with skill.

  17. like i said… EP40 IS THE PROBLEM!!! miller didnt put up with his BS. thats why they butt heads and he got villified and he got traded. then hughes looked at EP40 and he realized he cant win with that drama queen. we lost a generational player and EP40 was one of the reasons. if i met anyone that doesnt get along with the sedins (pair of the classiest ppl) that says alot about them. canucks need to complete the purge and Petey needs to be traded.

  18. This is why I have stopped watching podcasts that are mainly Canuck oriented. I could go through step by step where things went wrong but I am only going to give you the first move that sent this team in the wrong direction. Before you start thinking but that were doing so good in 23/24 season I don’t care about that time. We had a terrific captain and the team just needed some tweaking with the lineup. I remember how much fun it was watching Boeser & EP 40 together. The best memory I have is a game against Colorado and when I believe EP shot the puck off the end boards in the offensive end and Boeser got in first and scored. When management decided to sign JT and trade Horvat the captain who had time to say goodbye to his teammates l believe the culture in that room was irreversible damaged. I was getting tired of hearing Hughes this and that and all I kept thinking is this is a team game. I love that the guys were 4-1 on this road trip because according to all the sports media is they are going to tank without even trying. I think if it is possible that the sports media keep their mouths closed and EP is back that this team is going to be even better. When Hughes signed his last contract with the team he made it just long enough that at the end he was a UFA. I don’t believe he was going to sign with any Canadian team once his contract was up because he wanted to get back to living in the USA. Good luck and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

  19. Pretty clear there was a divide in the room and the Americans stuck together..how many times did quinn look off his best option on the pp (ep40) and chose to sling his floater on net instead. Americans are sore losers..miller hughes are prime examples of this.

  20. Hughes is an amazing D Man, but he IS a shitty captain. Hughes was acting like a fruity DIVA the last few months before the trade. He even gave up on plays and could be seen on the bench bitching at his team members.

  21. Looking at the draft prospects,
doesn’t it make more sense for us to go for tynan Lawrence, not McKenna or stenberg? I mean he is a centre, and that’s what we explicitly need. If we are rebuilding, that seems likely our biggest priority. However besides the top 3 pool, should we strive to get Viggo bjorck considering we have his brother since last year draft? I mean is there a chance to draft our second 1st round pick in the top 10? Thanks in advance for replying!

  22. A good leader doesn't mope around looking like a depressed 10 year old when Old Yeller' dies. Glad he's gone. Now, get the overpaid EP40 exported too.

  23. A Captain should be totally committed to the team through good times and bad. Ex. Linden, Smyl, Naslund, and Sedin. I don’t Hughes had this commitment or the leadership qualities required to be a Captain.

  24. Maybe Quinn underestimated how bad the media in Vancouver can be and said "fuck it". I know that's what I said when I got tired of the crap in the overpriced shithole.

  25. If Miller, Petey and Horvat (Petey the problem) were all adults, we should have all three still.

  26. There’s no rest for the wicked apparently… These douche bag have to invent things and create problems. Stir it up… Because they just want attention. It’s their job to create problems. That’s what journalism is all about these days

  27. If one recalls when Petty was coming to the end of his entry contract the Canucks had the twins and other players convince petty to stay and sign. That went public He wanted out then his attitude in the past three years seems to support that same desire. Time to trade petty 40.

  28. You guys are an absolute joke. The dude literally got up and said ā€œoh Petey was at the dinner? Mmm FEUDā€ what a joke.

  29. The 30 for 30 on the rise and fall of his career and he was able to hollow out the team of its best players and coach will be really something

  30. Quinn seemed like a moody nery cornball, hell of a player but he didn't give off captain vibes to me. It was like an NHL video game, the C went to the dude with the highest OVR

  31. To me from the second Petey signed that huge contract he became nothing more then a bot anchor on the team. Once he is health I would play him and if he's playing still at a 5 million dollar level park him in the press box for a game or two and try to get maybe a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick for him because we don't need this head case on this team.

  32. TL;DR: There was some real tension and distance between Pettersson and Hughes – mostly around Petey’s prep/conditioning vs Quinn’s ā€œall-inā€ approach – and they weren’t as close as before. But Johnston is clear: it wasn’t some dramatic feud and he doesn’t think it directly caused or sped up Hughes’ trade request. Quinn asked out because he didn’t believe in the team’s direction/winning trajectory, not because he decided ā€œI can’t win with that guy.ā€

  33. Would be excellent in a 30 minute bit if you could explain the context of the dinner you’re talking about…

  34. Man, these fanboys need to get REAL JOBS and not this gossiping bs! Parasites, tbh. You losers owe your very existence, your paycheque to these players. And you knock a guy whose wife just had a miscarriage for not being at a DINNER!!? Give your head a shake. What really needs a rebuild is the MEDIA IN VANCOUVER!
