Jonathan Marchessault to the Montreal Canadiens? 🚨 The trade talk is heating up — but does it actually make sense? On today’s show, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down why Marchessault is NOT the right fit for the Habs, despite the growing buzz around his name.

We dive into contract term, age, cap implications, and how (or if) Marchessault aligns with the Canadiens’ rebuild and long-term vision under Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton. Is this a win-now move that contradicts the timeline? Would it block younger players? Or is this just another case of name recognition driving bad trade logic?

We separate noise from reality, analyze Montreal’s real needs, and explain why this rumored fit doesn’t add up for the Canadiens right now.

  1. Besides maybe McCann, I’m not sure the Kraken have anyone that they would be willing to part with that provide an upgrade.

  2. If Columbus keeps slipping down the standings, would it be worthwhile to over pay for a player like Kirill Marchenko? He fits the mold they are looking for, and is young enough that moving considerable assets for him could be worth it.

  3. Ilya Mikheyev from Chicago? Roy + a 2027 5th that upgrades to a 4th if Mikheyev hits 15 goals this season or plays at least half of MTL’s playoff games is the maximum I’d pay. Anything more is an overpay for a 31-year-old role winger (who could briefly slot next to Suzuki and Caufield). Anything less for Chicago, though, and they’re selling too low.

  4. No to Marchessault … Don't like his age, production, cap hit and term left on his contract … Too risky, completely agree with Marco's perspective.

  5. Let's hope Buffalo loses their next 9 games and make Tuch available. Otherwise, they will try and sign him long term as a UFA next summer if he doesn't sign with the Sabres, no doubt.
