In Defense of Dan Muse, Crosby’s Record, Malkin/Letang Future & Trade ChatteršŸ”„

In this edition of No Pucks Given, Dan Kingerski breaks down the big picture for the Penguins after their crucial win on Sunday, calling it a “whole reset” for the team. Now that Sidney Crosby has secured the franchise’s all-time leading scorer record, the discussion shifts to the uncertain future of the core, including Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.

Plus, the rumor mill is churning, but the focus is on who the Penguins might trade—not who they might acquire.

Tune in as Kingerski tackles trade chatter around defensemen Matt Dumba and Connor Clifton, why a Brian Rust trade would be “sky-high”, and defends Coach Dan Muse against “dumb” fan demands for his firing. The episode also previews the huge game against the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

  1. The issue w/ Muse is that he doesn't project an error of confidence. Churchill is an apt comparison, because he was the GOAT at projecting cool in rough circumstances.

It's not the results, it's the vibe that the coach is giving off. Can't imagine the platers don't pick up on it.

  2. Cool everyone is starting to say what ive been saying for two or three weeks now. Thanks for another great show Dan. Merry Christmas.

  3. Hey Dan just want to let you know I really appreciate what you do I work part-time for WKBN and Youngstown and I cover the Penguins I really appreciate your approach and style and honesty

  4. I am most likely in a smaller group, as this is probable the 3rd incarnation of a team of this nature, it happens & the key is being sustained success-takes time. I started in the pre-Mario years in middle school. I dont think the win really meaning much. They have Sid and company, a couple of young guys and a bunch of short term or passengers until they build enough to be more consistent. Still feel they are a bottom 7 team and thats ok. The difference in this go around is they are overall in a better position than the last couple of times we did this.

  5. two people "reporting" on the Penguins with the same initials. One lauding Sidney Crosby and his achievement over Mario with ecstatic fandom, and the other asking the importance of winning a game via shootout. I cannot stand the first one.
As far as the Mckenna empty-own-netter. I once saw two future HOFers involved in one of those. Their names? Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. (i believe it was last year)
And I'm sorry but .880 is not good Dan. Time to wake up and realize this.

  6. My response to the Muse haters is that for most of November and December the Pens had 8 players from the opening night lineup on the IR. That's 40% of the starting roster. That is a lot of change in a very short time. It's no wonder they've struggled. Sure, they got Rakell, Acciari, Brazeau back, and Jarry before he was traded. You still have Lizotte, Geno, Caleb Jones, and Hallander on the IR.

  7. The logic is that some people put a tremendous amount of responsibility on the coach, whoever it is. Be it Sullivan or Muse. And they overreact when they have a bad stretch.
I dont think calling people stupid and crazy is the best way to attract new viewers? Customers?
Something to ponder if stupidity is such an important topic.
By defending these people doesn't mean I am one of them. I actually really like Dan Muse. But I do think his coaching IS being tested here lately.
And I think a lot of these 'stupid' fans are NOTICING.

Dan thinks the Pens can win "3 series" in the playoffs. He's "NOT JOKING". LOL!!!!
Yep the team that loses with huge leads given away, the Pens. The team that can't make the playoffs, the Pens.
CBJ and the Laffs are both .500% and the Laffs are in last place with 35 points. CBJ has 36 points. Pens have 39 points.

Dan has no idea who Connor McDavid, Connor Bedard, Leon Draisatl, Nathan MacKinnon, Macklin Celebrini, Nikita Kucherov, Alex Ovechkin or any of the other stars are, in a league that is loaded with great players. It's Sid by himself and the Pens on an island. There will be another draft with great players if Dubas the MID doesn't ruin it.

Pens are "in the playoffs". LOL. No they aren't. They have 4 teams ahead of them and they still aren't in the wildcard. Pens only have 3 teams below them for the basement in the East. He says Pens are only "1 day away from a playoff position". LOL. In reality they are only one Crosby injury away from LAST IN THE LEAGUE. Rust to the Sens for Ridley Greig and a 1st round pick. The Sens are scouting Rust.

  11. If trading Geno is BUNK then the Pens organization is BUNK. Geno could be a 2C on a Cup team and resign with the Pens for 1 more year. Selfish Geno stays on the Pens for bad asset management. Selfless Geno gets traded to a contender for a 1st and or a REAL PROSPECT. Geno to Dallas for a 1st and Liam Bichsell and or Mavrick Bouque. It's about the future of the team and the reality of where the current team is at. It's not about GM Geno.

  12. I love your casual, ā€œno fluffā€ presentation style Dan! Keep up the great work!

  13. Goddamnit Dan ! you’re just like Jay Caufield F***in up CLIFTON’s name ! he’s called him ā€œChadā€ like 3 or 4 times atleast .
side note – I met Jay as he was walking through during Intermission – of course the historic night SID the KID became SID the KING – but holy shit is he tall !
& super nice – I like to get all the PENS coverage as I can & I told him I watch his podcast & he laughed & said it was very new in a humble way . always dig his analysis on certain plays throughout the years
hopefully we’ll bump into each other & talk some sauce !
keep it up Buddy ! Great work !

  14. & also Dan … I also wanna know – & maybe you can ask Dan Muse what he thought – not on record but a brief encountering –
I think it might’ve been the first goal of Montreal that happened right in from of me … Ryan Shea breaks his stick … Connor Dewar realizes this & maybe 2 seconds too slow gives him HIS stick – a one two three happens & Shea’s DEW stick was like 2 inches away from deflecting the pass …
did Dewar do the right thing at the time ?
I think he did cause what is a D-Man without his stick ?Dewar knew he had to give him it in case any damage happened down low meanwhile he can atleast use his body by the circle or up at the point .

  15. Muse hasn't been dealt a roster that is ready to compete for the playoffs… aging superstars, some prospects, a defense that is problematic at best, and journeymen. You can't roast him at this point. You have to judge him later on if he can develop young players… He wasn't handed NHL ready young talent. Also Dubas has done well to acquire draft picks but his veteran acquistions sure haven't been very good. I wonder if Crosby likes what he has done and I doubt it.
